AXA Corporate Center's main missions are to:
Steer the entities in order to ensure the coherence of the strategies, the consistency of the commercial approaches as well as the optimization of the risks and results.
Defining and coordinating Group policies, different transversal projects and standards, identifying and sharing best practices.
Supporting the entities in order to help them to grow, to develop their offer, their management and steering standards as well as their risk management.
The head office of AXA Group (GIE AXA), based in La Défense, gathers the Group's corporate activities. It coordinates the various entities according to the Group's strategy and is responsible for managing international projects. The headquarters is composed with over 1000 employees and is distinguished by its strong international culture (45 nationalities).
Context:
AXA Group Risk Management Property & Casualty (GRM P&C) deals with the most sophisticated P&C technical and actuarial challenges of a leading international insurance company, among which the management of natural catastrophe risks (CAT). Natural variability of climate and seismic activity have demonstrated their devastating potential, climate change bringing additional uncertainty for the future. AXA's rapid expansion over the last years notably with the acquisition of XL Catlin - both in terms of geographical footprint and P&C insurance offer - widely exposes AXA to natural perils, being in charge of the financial protection of its clients. In this context, AXA must maintain state-of-the-art CAT risk management techniques through permanent innovations.
AXA GRM brings together high level and multidisciplinary staff with engineers, PhDs, actuaries, data scientists and financials split between Paris, Hong Kong, Zürich and Madrid. Its main missions are focused on the following key areas:
Analyse, model and aggregate the Group's risks (economic capital);
Define and implement the process enabling to secure the undertaken risks (risk appetite, assets accumulation, longevity, natural catastrophe...);
Optimize the Group protections (reinsurance, securitization, hedging, etc.) to meet the desired strategy.
Team presentation:
Position belongs to the GRM P&C CAT & Reinsurance Risk department (19 FTEs) which is organized in four excellence centers (CAT Data & Analytics, R&D Modeling, Accumulation Management and Reinsurance), the Hydraulics engineer intern will work closely with the CAT Data & Analytics and the R&D Modeling teams
Because of its worldwide exposure, the CAT Data & Analytics team is developing the Live Cat project, which automatically quantifies the impact of a recent disaster on AXA's exposure. The Live Cat takes into account a wide catalog of natural disasters around the world (earthquake, windstorm, hurricane, typhon, flood). The Live Cat process consists of six steps:
Event alert generation;
Determination of the spatial footprint of the event;
Intersection with AXA's exposure;
Vulnerability module to estimate gross losses;
Financial module to estimate AXA's global loss amount;
Reporting.
The intern will work more specifically on the generation of a footprint and the determination of return periods.
Primary missions for this position:
We are recruiting a Hydraulics intern with a scientific background in Hydraulics to join us in our developments of the scientific understanding of those risks and its operational valuation across AXA entities.
He/she will work on the European flood of July 2021, named Bernd.
Part 1. Description of the event

Establishment of a database composed of local observation (rain gauge, hydrometric station, etc.) and model output (ERA5 spatialized data).
Part 2. Reconstruction of the flood footprint
Modeling the streamflow with the hydrological model GR4J (Perrin et al., 2003).
Recovery/construction of rating curves.
Modeling the footprint with one or several hydraulic model.
Estimate entity and market insured losses from the footprint with the internal model NOTUS.
Part 3. Associate return periods to a flood event.
Identify the different return periods associated with the event (return period on precipitation, streamflow, insured losses, etc.).
Application and comparison of frequency analysis methods.
Comparison with the return periods from external sources.
At the end of the internship is expected:
An internship report;
An oral presentation of the results;
