All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.About the roleThe Natural History Museum has launched a bold new strategy, declaring a planetary emergency, and setting out how it will be responding and working towards a vision of a future - where both people and planet thrive - and its mission to create advocates for the planet.To create advocates for the planet, we want to engage and involve the widest possible audience. Over the last year our Learning and Audiences team has investigated who is under-represented and underserved by the Museum currently and, listening to our community partners and audiences, we're developing a plan that will see us building meaningful, long-lasting, and equitable relationships with local organisations and people. The Community Engagement Manager will lead on finalising this strategic work, defining the programme and taking it forward, working with colleagues across the Museum, key partners and funders. The postholder will forge new and strengthen existing relationships with community groups that work with diverse families and young people aged 15-25 living locally, creating opportunities to connect to those who are the least engaged with nature, science, and the Museum.This will include developing accessible and innovative activities that we can deliver in the Museum, as well as offsite in the surrounding three boroughs. Due to the nature of how we work in this area, it is essential that the successful individual has a solid understanding and experience of good collaborative practice, as working together, listening and learning will be at the heart of our approach.Through working directly with community groups and understanding their needs, the postholder will also actively support the Museum to better understand barriers to science, nature, and the Museum itself. They'll act as an advocate for our community audiences, involving them where appropriate to shape what we offer our visitors, in turn helping the Museum to become a more inclusive organisation.About you This is an exciting opportunity to help the Natural History Museum become the best neighbour we can be to our local communities. To that end we're looking for someone who has experience working directly with community organisations as a practitioner or facilitator, being highly motivated, passionate for working responsively to audience need and able to use initiative to drive opportunities forward. They will also have experience influencing others with diplomacy, working strategically, and understand the complexities of working in a multifaceted public sector organisation.Though a background in science/nature and learning may be helpful, what is more important is the individual's ability to develop an exciting engagement activity and event programme together with others through excellent interpersonal skills, and being able to connect with and build positive, meaningful relationships with a wide range of people.How to applyIf that sounds like you, please apply online on the Natural History Museum's careers portal, at Closing date: 9am, Monday 6 DecemberInterviews expected: Wednesday 15 or Thursday 16 DecemberSalary: £34,421 per annum
