Job description

The Charity

Founded in 2015, Breaking Barriers is a fast-paced, start-up charity with a mission to help refugees in London gain the knowledge, confidence and experience to secure stable and fulfilling employment in their new home. We offer effective and flexible employment support in direct partnership with businesses that help refugees secure work, progress into better jobs, and successfully integrate into UK society. We have a unique approach, working with corporate partners to help refugees develop careers that match their skills, experience and aspirations.

Since Breaking Barriers' inception in 2015, we have grown to support in excess of 500 refugees per year and have ambitious plans to expand this as part of our strategic plan. We concentrate on getting things done in a flexible environment where everyone is encouraged to take ownership and contribute. We are a team of over 40 employees supported by several hundred volunteers, who are all driven and committed to helping London's refugee community. We are looking for similarly driven and ambitious individuals keen to join an enterprising organisation where they can benefit from the opportunity to innovate and shape the direction of the charity. Colleagues who thrive are passionate, driven and have the confidence to work autonomously while remaining team players and sharing credit with all involved.

We are looking for someone who lives and breathes our values:

Mission-led: our clients come before everything else.
Welcoming: we want all people to feel happy, comfortable and secure with us.
Collaborative: we are supportive and considerate, curiously exploring other viewpoints to find solutions.
Enterprising: we are discerningly bold, entrepreneurial and have the courage to give things a go.

Role Overview

Breaking Barriers is experiencing a rise in enquiries from businesses who want to make their roles accessible to people from a refugee background and our clients (we use this term for the people we support). With a constantly changing recruitment landscape and with so many companies interested offering employment outcomes to our clients, we need to act quickly and opportunistically to make these roles accessible to our clients more efficiently. In parallel, we know that there are people from refugee backgrounds outside of Breaking Barrier's current client base who could be filling these roles.

We have created an exciting new role within the team so that we can maximise the number of clients and people from refugee backgrounds filling vacant roles with businesses approaching Breaking Barriers. This role has a dual function of firstly, coordinating and speeding up processes for hiring programmes within Breaking Barriers and, secondly, creating new processes to open up job opportunities to prospective clients within our referral partner network. As Breaking Barriers scales nationally, we see the potential of expanding this model of support for clients of referral partner into new regions within the UK.

Forming part of the Employment team, this role acts as a focal point for coordination between the Employment team and the Corporate Partnerships team but is primarily client-focused with an emphasis on developing a deep understanding of our client base, working with clients directly to apply for roles and maintaining relationships with referral partner networks.

The purpose of this role is to:

Coordinate and accelerate processes for hiring programmes and recruitment in order to maximise outcomes for clients;
Maintain an overview of client skills and goals across in order to widen access for clients to job opportunities and inform a client-led approach to business development, ensuring that hiring programmes are in line with our mission;
Scale up opportunities for people from refugee backgrounds by creating recruitment pathways within referral partner networks.

In summary, this role will:

Represent the Employment team in Corporate Partnerships meetings to ensure effective communication around job opportunities;
Identify, screen and provide support (where needed) at pace for clients wishing to apply for opportunities;
Improve the use of data management, workflows and processes between the Employment team and Corporate Partnership team to ensure effective and efficient ways of working and to inform a sector-wide approach to working with businesses;
Pilot new hiring programmes for prospective clients within referral partner networks to expand access to recruitment initiatives to more people from a refugee background, and implementing a nationwide approach based on the pilot's results.

The successful candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas:

A good understanding of employment support (including best practice in job applications and interviews);
Data-driven: confident using CRMs and data to make processes more efficient and decisions based on evidence;
Improvement mindset: looking at ways to make processes and ways of working better, to see beyond the status quo and innovate;
Extremely proactive with an ability to work at pace;
Excellent interpersonal skills: an ability to build trust with colleagues and work directly with clients;
Strong external relationship management skills and confidence in representing the charity externally (primarily with businesses and referral partners);
Excellent communication skills and proven ability to adapt communication style and information to difference audiences;
An ability to grasp new concepts quickly and develop a broad understanding across different sectors, roles and employers.
