Job description

Action Tutoring is an official National Tutoring Programme organisation that enables young minds to succeed by matching them with qualified volunteer tutors across the country. Our work focuses on closing the attainment gap that can severely hinder students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We offer in-person and online tutoring that can add up to five months of progress to a pupil's knowledge and study skills. With the Department for Education estimating the attainment gap could widen anywhere between 11-75% as a result of the pandemic, we know our support is needed now more than ever.

Volunteering with Action Tutoring is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community. Participating for just one hour a week you will be able to directly support pupils in building their confidence, and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future, all while developing your own industry experience!

As an English or maths tutor, you get to choose one of our partner schools across England to volunteer with. You can support either in person (following Covid prevention measures) or online (through our virtual classroom). Leading tuition with one or two pupils at the same time each week across the course of a school term, you will build relationships that have great impact. Action Tutoring provides all of our tutors with training and workbooks to use in sessions, and we will also process a DBS check for you.

What are we looking for?

This academic year we aim to support over 8,000 disadvantaged pupils to build their maths and English subject knowledge, and are in need of 3,600 wonderful volunteer tutors to join us.

We are looking for professionals and students who want to support pupils in succeeding. Enthusiasm for learning and the subject you're tutoring is important, but you don't have to have studied it for your degree. Experience working with young people is also helpful but not essential.

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

You need to be a fluent English speaker, have achieved an A or B at A-Levels (or equivalent) in the subject(s), or similar subject, and have or are studying for a degree (in any subject) you are wishing to tutor. Good communication skills, patience, commitment to the process, and resilience are desired.

We do review all qualifications and experience however and would encourage you to apply - even if you don't meet the exact stated criteria.

Benefits

Through tutoring with us our volunteers are able to develop a wealth of transferable skills that employers love (interpersonal, organisational, communication) all whilst making a significant difference. We have worked with students from universities and corporations across the U.K. Help directly in your community.

We currently have schools in Birmingham and Coventry, Bristol, Chester, Liverpool, Southport and Wirral, London, Newcastle and Durham, Nottingham and Derby, Sheffield and Sussex. You can also join us from any location in England, Scotland and Wales as an online tutor.
