We are looking for a highly motived and experienced cancer nurse with an interest in or experience of palliative care to join our Enhanced Supportive Care Team (early palliative care team) as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The role involves providing support to patients in the prevention and management of the effects of cancer and its treatment including both physical and psychological symptoms. The postholder will provide support to patients with advanced cancer who have unmet symptom and psychological needs, clinically review them, and work with them both during and after anticancer treatment to optimise their symptom control and plan for their future. As a Macmillan Nurse, you will be an ambassador for the Macmillan Cancer Charity supporting their initiatives to achieve the best and most supportive experience for individuals affected by cancer.
This post may be of particular interest to nurses with experience in palliative care and plays a key role within the multidisciplinary team in the co-ordination and delivery of complex care to patients and also supporting research activities.
The successful post holder will also be integral to further service development ensuring patient-centred care that is of the highest quality, working in line with national cancer standards.
Possessing excellent communication and organisational skills, the postholder will have a key role in working clinically alongside Oncology Multidisciplinary teams comprised of medical staff, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Allied Health Professionals within the Macmillan Cancer Centre.
The postholder will also build strong links with Primary Care including General Practice, Community Palliative Care, and community nursing teams to optimise communication and to facilitate care in the community setting.

To act as an expert nurse in Enhanced Supportive Care for patients and their families with complex palliative care needs. Monitoring, evaluating and reviewing palliative interventions and Advanced Care Panning and taking a key worker role as indicated.
To undertake specialist nursing assessment of patients with complex palliative care needs through subjective questioning, objective examination, and study of appropriate written material (eg clinical records) available
To prioritise factors involved in the patients and informal carers condition through advanced clinical reasoning based on knowledge of current professional opinion, patient's prognosis and other physical, psychological, spiritual, ethical, social, and mental health records
Develop and conduct skilled nursing interventions with palliative care patients - assessing palliative care needs and addressing issues such as quality of life, futility, prognosis and end of life decision making within an ethical framework
To constantly monitor, evaluate and review clinical assessments and interventions within the multidisciplinary framework and to modify approach to clinical care as necessary
To ensure clinical records are recorded and maintained on the team database.
To ensure that clinical care that is undertaken is safe and high quality, and this it is continuously improving
Attend and speak at network, regional and national meetings
To identify patients, their informal carers of children whom may be at risk and vulnerable.
Promptly enact the process outlined in the policies for Care of Vulnerable Adults and Care of Vulnerable Children
Maintain health, safety and security of self and others in own work area through ensuring own and others' knowledge of relevant local / national policies and procedures, and that these are adhered to
Work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional standards and guidelines
Contribute to the development of services
Assess peoples' health and wellbeing needs and (where appropriate) those that are important to them.
Plan and deliver programmes to address peoples' complex and changing health and wellbeing needs
Promote peoples' equity, diversity and rights, through ensuring that own and others' practice is in the best interests of patients
Plan and deliver research / evidence based care and treatment with guidance and supervision from other health professionals
Work with other practitioners in supporting patients' information needs, promoting their wishes and beliefs, and addressing their concerns
Monitor and review the effectiveness of interventions with the patient and colleagues, agreeing changes to meet needs and established goals
Develop own knowledge and skills and contribute to the development of others
Support junior staff in their learning and application of theory to practice through teaching and facilitation
Participate in clinical supervision
Contribute to the development of the service
Participate in the implementation of the UCLH Nursing and Midwifery Strategy and UCLH top 10
Demonstrates leadership through clinical expertise, delivering high standards of personailsed care by acting as a key worker, identifying needs through a holistic needs assessment, and co-creating a Care and Support Plan with people living with cancer.
Establish and maintain communication with people about routine and daily activities, overcoming any differences in communication between the people involved.
Comply with Trust policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI); this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and safe disposal of sharps
