Job description

Summary:

We are looking for a data privacy lawyer who will (1) support our in-house legal team for 50% of the time on data privacy issues, and (2) work within the data privacy team in our compliance department for 50% of the time.

The role of the in-house legal team at PwC is just like any other in-house legal team in a large UK head quartered organisation. The team advises PwC on legal matters arising in its business including litigation, contracts with clients and suppliers and M&A work.

The in-house team includes around 50 individuals.

The compliance department looks after a range of issues including data privacy and information management.

Following the introduction of the EU General Data Protection Regulation in May 2018 and updated UK data protection legislation post Brexit, in the context of ongoing legal changes in this space, and with the PwC network responding to an increasing need to handle data appropriately and to use it to deliver its services, our legal and data protection teams are seeing a high level of activity which is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

We are currently looking to recruit, on a permanent full-time basis, a data privacy lawyer to work between our in-house legal team and our compliance team. This is a great role for a junior lawyer with a good grounding in data protection and a keen interest deepening that expertise to develop within an established team.

Within our in-house legal team, this lawyer will support the existing data protection lawyer on data privacy matters, will support the rest of the team on technical queries and will be one of the UK OGC point of contacts within the PwC network on data privacy matters. The individual will also need to be able to draft, review and negotiate data protection provisions in contracts, including GDPR compliant contracts. Negotiation will often take place directly with our clients and suppliers, and/or their lawyers.

We have an unmatched client base in the UK in terms of breadth and quality and our services range from audit, through more traditional professional services to new and innovative offerings using all forms of technology from analytics, through AI, to blockchain and beyond. All of these services have data privacy issues which are ever changing in the current world. This lawyer will be at the heart of those issues, advising internal clients at all levels on how to best navigate them.

Within our compliance team, this lawyer will report to the current Data Protection Officer (DPO) and will assist him in all aspects of his role as DPO. The individual appointed to this role will take a key role in advising the firm on its processes and procedures to collect, store and process personal data which will involve investigating legal issues, embedding policies, and formulating legal views about potential problems and the impact of regulatory guidance, enforcement actions and case law. The individual will also be involved in providing legal assistance and guidance in responding to data breach incidents. The recent pandemic has given rise to a range of data issues which this team has been called on to advise from apps for staff, to retention of temperature readings and beyond. This is an important and evolving area for the firm and this team is at the heart of that.

This position is primarily UK focussed, however PwC LLP is part of the global network of PwC member firms and there will undoubtedly be an international feature to some of the work.

We are flexible about where this role is based within the UK although the majority of the legal and data protection teams are based in London and Birmingham.

Requirements:

  • Solicitor with a detailed knowledge of English Law, at least 3 years Post Qualification Experience (or equivalent). Time spent working in-house an advantage but not a requirement.

  • Good technical professional knowledge in data protection.

  • Good knowledge and experience with UK and EU data protection law and regulatory guidance.

  • Ability to formulate opinions and advice on matters relating to data privacy using sound judgment to ensure that the firm's best interests are served.

  • Ability to tailor advice to the specific needs of the business and apply common sense and practical solutions.

  • Ability to adapt to change and to be open minded and innovative in their thinking.

  • Good legal drafting skills.

  • Sound, confident judgement and well developed influencing skills.

  • An ability to build strong relationships and become a trusted advisor to the business.
