Job description

Powersystems is a high voltage engineering company specialising in electrical power infrastructure, grid connections and renewable generation. ​Due to continuing success and a secure sales pipeline, we are looking to recruit a Design Manager to manage our team of design engineers and CAD technicians.

The Design Manager role is diverse, challenging and rewarding. As an Electrical Design Engineer you will be given the opportunity to practice and develop a wide range of skills including specification of HV primary equipment, design of protection and control schemes, reviewing and conducting simulation and modelling studies to demonstrate compliance.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include:
▶Management and support of our team of CAD technicians.
▶Management and support of our team of Electrical Design Engineers.
▶Updating existing and compiling new company design standards and management of design process.
▶Producing standards for technical specifications for primary equipment and protection and control equipment.
▶Select and specify primary equipment and design HV substations from 11 kV to 132 kV.
▶Work closely with the in-house CAD drafting team to generate equipment layouts, cable route drawings, construction, and legal plans for new HV connections.
▶Design secondary control wiring and protection schemes for substations and prepare protection reports.
▶Produce AC/DC schematics for protection, control, and SCADA panels, and liaise with our in-house panel assemblers on the construction of panels.
▶Select HV and LV cables and design cable routes using CYMCAP and Amtech software.
▶Prepare multicore cable schedules.
▶Prepare design packages for DNO contestable works from 11 kV to 132 kV.
▶Produce designs for electrical balance of plant works from 11 kV to 132 kV.
▶Ensure that all designs are designed for safety and are compliant with CDM and Health and Safety regulations, including producing design risk assessments, and effectively communicating risks to project engineers and construction operatives.
▶Manage and review simulation studies for generation connections undertaken by other consultants or carried out in-house, including load flow, reactive power capability, fault level analysis, power quality, and harmonic studies to demonstrate compliance with Engineering Recommendations, the Distribution Code, the Grid Code, and industry standards.
▶Undertake earthing design studies for HV substations using CDEGS software.
▶Attend sites for inspection and design purposes and attend manufacturers factory acceptance tests when required.
▶Be responsible for managing the delivery of designs within agreed timeframes and to a high quality that reflects Powersystems reputation as high voltage specialists.
▶Build relationships with clients, and attend design and project co-ordination meetings with clients, their consultants, and DNO & TNO representatives.
▶Project a professional image to clients and colleagues.
Qualifications / skills
Candidates should have gained relevant experience of high voltage electrical engineering design (11 kV and above) within the electrical contracting or utility industries. Experience of work at the EHV level (66 & 132 kV) is required.

▶Candidates must have previous experience as an electrical engineer within the electrical contracting or utilities industries. You will possess excellent technical knowledge and be able to apply this in a practical way.
▶2.1 Degree in Electrical Engineering.
▶A higher degree or post graduate qualification in power systems would be an advantage.
▶Have obtained or be working towards professional registration with the IET at IENG / CENG level.
▶The ability to manage multiple design projects and prioritise conflicting project deadlines.
▶The ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and project engineers, to understand their expectations and justify your design decisions.
▶Strong report writing skills and the ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
▶The ability to support the continued development of electrical design engineers by providing technical guidance.
▶The ability to successfully manage a team of engineers and provide wider support for the project engineers for technical queries.
▶Must be available to travel on work related business with occasional overnight stays.
▶Must hold a full UK driving license.
