Job description

As Head of Communications you will oversee internal and external communications, articulating TRAID's work and charitable objectives to diverse audiences with an overall aim to raise awareness of, and support for, the charity's work to reduce the negative impacts of clothes production, consumption, and waste on people and planet.

We particularly welcome applicants who are committed to the issues TRAID's work addresses, who use charity shops, and who source some of their clothes second-hand and understand the socio-environmental urgency of doing so.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and drive strategic communication campaigns throughout the year - for example, developing concepts, creating content, delivery, and reporting
  • Create, commission, and edit content for TRAID's comms campaigns, comms channels and media which are well-written, accessible and jargon free
  • Manage media requests including providing quotes, supporting the CEO in her role as a spokesperson and facilitating press and filming work at TRAID and other locations.
  • Build strong media relationships e.g., with journalists to proactively secure positive press and PR to increase awareness of, and support for, TRAID's charitable objectives
  • Writing punchy, clear press releases
  • Manage TRAID's existing communication channels e.g., social media, blogs and e-news
  • Provide creativity and expertise to further develop TRAID's communication channels
  • Oversee TRAID's brand identity, visuals and messaging working inter-organisationally to ensure brand consistency and adherence to communication protocols, and externally with designers, agencies, and other partners

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrable knowledge of some of the social and environmental issues TRAID works on relating to clothes production, consumption, and waste
  • At least 3+ years' experience of core communications campaign skills including public speaking, writing, mobilisation, research, press and PR, producing comms resources
  • Proven ability delivering integrated communications to raise the profile of TRAID's work to reduce the impact of clothes on people and planet using communication and campaigning methods
  • Experience of proactively placing stories and pitching to journalists
  • Ability to create engaging credible content on often complex issues for TRAID's communications channels to engage, educate and inspire diverse audiences
  • Strong writing, editing and proofing skills with an excellent eye for detail
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and on own initiative
  • Good-interpersonal skills. Collegiate, diplomatic and empathetic
  • Excellent written and spoken English

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • To attend Board meetings with Trustees when requested
  • To attend and contribute to weekly Senior Management Team meetings
  • To produce quarterly reports covering all communications work to deadline
  • To monitor TRAID media using an external agency
  • To work collaboratively with TRAID's external designer and other stakeholders to produce cross-organisational on-brand communication materials

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of the fashion industry
  • Knowledge of the UK charity retail and / or reuse sector
  • Experience of working on environmental comms and campaigns
  • Experience of working in a press agency or as a journalist
