Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Applied Intelligence (AI) is currently recruiting for a Lead Functional Safety Engineer to support one of our UK projects within the Oil and Gas / Petrochemical industry.

Whilst this role can be based anywhere in the UK, mobility and travel to customer sites and face to face meetings with colleagues will be expected as required.

The Lead Engineer will provide technical, project management and functional responsibility for Functional Safety project execution.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Acts in Lead technical and supervisory roles in project definition, development, and execution
  • Leads project sub-teams during system design and implementation
  • Coordinate with other disciplines in the preparation and development of the deliverables and ensure that other disciplines' input is incorporated
  • Develop the Safety Requirements Specification (SRS), Emergency Depressurization & blowdown specifications, SIL validation procedures and Fire & Gas specification in accordance with project, Wood, national and international codes and standards including IEC61508/11
  • Prepare the Functional Safety Management Plan (FSMP) and project philosophy documents, where required to support functional safety
  • Ensure compliance with Functional Safety specifications as well as applicable code requirements and national/ international standards
  • Carrying out verification reviews as per Project standards
  • Support deployment of Functional Safety life cycle plan
  • Produces Monthly technical and Commercial Progress Reports
  • Control of budget and labour hours
  • Customer focal point, ensuring client satisfaction / requirements are addressed or met
  • Support the bid and estimating function especially for future phases of work
  • Supports project evaluation (Technical KPIs)


Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent demonstratable experience
  • Chartered Engineer and member of appropriate engineering institution
  • Good experience of EPC/MAC, plant operations experience in Process Engineering or Automation & Control Systems within the oil/gas, hydrocarbon, refinery, offshore or infrastructure industries
  • TUV FS Engineer certificate
  • Experience in Brownfield upgrades / replacement automation and control projects
  • Compressor Station / Metering experience is advantageous
  • Maintain familiarity with latest industry developments and predict the impact on company activities
  • Advise superiors and peer groups on selected / new statutory obligations and industry wide approaches to compliance
  • Commercially aware
  • Strong leadership ability, communication skills, enthusiasm, and diplomacy
  • Inquisitive, well organised and have a keen eye for detail
  • Able to operate in an integrated team environment supporting and leading others with a desire and ability to build trust and respect throughout the team
