Overall purpose

Teach sections of English to Grade 7 students. The School aims to provide an outstanding American Education in an international setting. Students at ASL study a curriculum that employs North American educational philosophy and teaching methods with a global perspective.

Summary of duties

  • Teach sections of English to Grade 7 students
  • Prepare courses, coordinate and plan curriculum with other members of the department, and liaise with other departments as appropriate
  • Act as a homeroom teacher/advisor to approximately 20 students
  • Monitor and evaluate students' progress, prepare for parent conferences, complete report cards, etc.
  • Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research, and topics of importance in English education by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers on a departmental and school-wide basis
  • Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students at all times
  • Organize and participate in field trips to facilitate active learning
  • Participate in regular, purposeful pedagogy meetings and in professional development sessions
  • Provide continuity of the students' educational experience to allow smooth transition from/to the US education system
  • Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities
  • Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Principal

Selection criteria

Essential qualifications/experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline
  • Substantive full-time teaching Middle School English in a similar school setting
  • Experience in a school with a similar teaching philosophy to that of ASL, which employs comparable teaching methods and curricula, or training that will adequately prepare the candidate for the American style teaching methods employed by the School
  • Training and experience in cultural competency initiatives to support diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom, department and workplace
  • Significant recent professional development
  • Demonstrably strong oral and written communication skills
  • A desire to work in a team-focused, community environment
  • Excellent technology skills; up-to-date knowledge of current trends in classroom technology
  • Willingness to contribute to school life outside of the classroom
  • A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children

Desirable qualifications/experience:

  • Advanced degree preferred
