The Senior Network Engineer role provides second and third line support and is responsible for managing a personal workload to investigate, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve incidents and problems across multiple network and security technologies for the HMRC estate.
Ensuring service levels are maintained and liaising with internal delivery groups, third parties, service management and the client.
Sound core networking/security skills are an essential requirement for the role and requires an individual with especially strong skills in complex corporate networking.
The role is therefore multi skilled and someone who is experienced in second and third line incident resolution and root cause analysis on corporate network technologies.
Additionally, the role will participate in activity maintaining the existing network estate involvement in the delivery of new services and infrastructure components into live support.
Key Responsibilities:
* Handle incidents of all priorities with the ability to devise resolutions and provide professional communications across a range of stakeholders, internally and externally, and often under significant pressure.
* Lead and Manage Investigations and troubleshooting activities during Major Incidents.
* Proactively investigate and uncover network performance issues and bottlenecks that are adversely affecting HMRC colleagues and customers in our estate, taking accountability for the remediation across the team.
* Continually reviewing monitoring dashboards and service views of networks with service management and operations.
* Deliver high quality work to meet HMRC expectations and Business needs.
* Attend technical meetings, change advisory boards, service reviews when required.
* Participate in activity to maintainenance activties, including upgrades, certificate renewals
* Ensuring network is proactively managed and capacity and performance management conducted using network tooling capabilities
* Create and maintain technical documentation, including process procedure and work instructions, following the internal quality framework
* Develop and contribute to Continual Service Improvement.
* Develop and contribute to the training of junior staff where required.
Role requires the Network Engineer to remain up-to-date on current/future network and security technologies and gain certification in selected technology areas in order to conduct incident/problem resolution both in and out of hours
HMRC has an in-house Networks Operations that is made up of Associate, Intermediate and Senior Engineers and an Incident Queue Management/Network Analysis function. This role is for a senior engineer, which is the advanced level technical role for the team.
Duties include, but are not limited to:-
Incident resolution (third line), root cause analysis, monitoring, traffic analysis/reporting and service improvement of Advanced IP networking (VLANs,HSRP, OSPF,BGP,MPLS-layer 2/3 switching,QoS, VPNs) and security infrastructure across multiple vendors. You will be expected to be able to travel across the UK to support HMRC sites and Data Centres.
Lead on assesment of new technologies and new services, coaching (intermediate and associate) Network Engineers to develop and enhance skill levels and capabilities within the department
It is expected that the successful applicant will have a minimum:-
* Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
* Cisco Certified Network Expert (CCIE) written or in-progress
* Certified Information Systems Security Professional or advanced Checkpoint certification
Five years expertise supporting some of the following technologies in a large corporate/government network:-
* Check Point/Fortinet Firewalls, Internet Proxy/Content Checking (McAfee/Forcepoint), Network Load Balancing (Cisco/F5), Switching (Cisco, Aruba, ACI), Wireless technologies (HP Aruba/Airwave), Cloud (AWS/Azure) technologies, Network Monitoring/Tooling, Detailed Network Packet Analysis (Probes), Encryption devices
Applicants should:-
* Have proven problem solving skills in network technologies and have an understanding of the ITIL 3 framework
* Be proficient in leading associate/intermediate engineers in the complex, high priority and major incidents.
* Have experience in communicating complex problems and solutions to a senior audience
* Interface professionally with customers, stakeholders and suppliers
* Be able to produce and maintain high quality technical documentation
This role works shifts
* 7:00 - 15:00 Mon-Fri -Early Shift
* 12:00 - 20:00 Mon -Thu/11:00 -19:00 Fri - Late Shift
