Role Synopsis
The Counsel will be one of bp's lawyers in the Business Development & Zero Carbon legal team, advising and supporting five growing business groups across the newly formed Gas and Low Carbon global businesses.
Gas & Low Carbon
Renewables Growth is responsible for delivering the growth strategy for bp's renewables businesses globally, such as through bid round participation, bilateral negotiations or M&A activity. Recent activity includes entering the UK offshore wind market after bp and partner EnBW were selected as preferred bidder in the 4th leasing round.
Zero Carbon Energy is responsible for managing bp's existing renewable energy products in solar energy ( bp's shareholding in Lightsource bp), US onshore wind assets and biofuels, as well as new assets delivered through the Renewables Growth team such as the recently announced strategic partnership with Equinor to develop offshore wind energy in the US.
Hydrogen & CCUS is responsible for developing hydrogen and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage) business models and markets, building new decarbonization capabilities and solutions. A current project that is being supported is Net Zero Teesside project where bp and partners are working together to decarbonize local industry in the Teesside area using CCUS technology.
Integrated Gas & Power is responsible for driving the development of gas to power, renewable power offers and integration of power value chains as well as develop new markets in integrated gas and low carbon energy.
Gas Growth is responsible for leading the optimization and growth of bp's natural gas portfolio, including global gas business development.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
The successful candidate shall be capable of navigating a complex matrix organization, deploying technical excellence, and applying a collaborative style and approach. The candidate shall be able to apply good business rigor and judgment, strive for optimal solutions and will have a passion for effective delivery of tailored advice.
- Legal experience in a respected law firm or reputed in-house environment
- Experience in M&A (including JVs) and/or commercial contracts in the renewable energy or power sector. Experience in hydrogen, CCUS and offshore wind projects is favorable
- Proven record of leading or providing a significant contribution to the successful completion of numerous transactions/projects.
- Strong technical legal skills, combined with an ability to take a strategic, pragmatic and commercial view on the challenges and issues facing bp
- Demonstrated ability to provide concise advice on complex matters and effectively influence clients and other stakeholders
- Effective communication skills
- Well developed emotional intelligence, with sensitivity to cultural and people differences, receptive to and energised by a diverse organization, at all times seeking to maintain wellbeing within our organisation
- Highest professional and ethical standards that can be effectively deployed in a proportionate manner, maintaining an effective culture of compliance across our businesses
