Personal Carer Job Description

Experienced Personal Carer required for my elderly, disabled mother, to care for her in her home. The personal carer will support my mother in all areas of her life, at home and in the community, so she can lead an individual and independent life.

You must be respectful, reliable, and able to work flexibly if it becomes necessary to adjust regular hours or introduce new tasks reasonable and relevant to the role. You must be responsive to my mother's needs, listening and acting upon our direct requests. You will work under our supervision and are accountable to us. Honesty, kindness, and sensitivity are essential qualities, as are proven practical skills in care work and moving and handling.

Personal Needs

• Support to move from bed or chair safely, using hoist and slide sheets
• Support with dressing and undressing
• Support with showering/bathing
• Assistance with using the toilet & hygienic practice
• Assistance with hair, teeth & skincare etc.
• Preparation of light meals/snacks & drinks
• Assisting with administering medication & making accurate notes
• Assistance with chair-based exercise and limb movement
• Ensure my mother has practical reach of essential comforts before finishing your shift
• Writing clear handover notes at the end of each shift

Domestic Needs

• General light housework, including some clearing-up and hoovering
• Feeding and care of a strictly indoor cat
• Changing bed linen and turning mattress regularly
• Laundry
• Readying day & nightwear
• Readying essential care materials, lotions etc for the next day
• Shopping and ordering/collecting medicine

General Assistance

• To help my mother with any chosen activity, inside or outside her home and to move around
• Assist my mother into her transport via wheelchair
• Assist my mother to travel to and take part in social activities
• To act swiftly and calmly in an emergency, and contact the emergency services as required to keep my mother safe and well
• Contact the appointed family member/s if my mother demonstrates symptoms or behaviour indicating illness

Personal Carer's Responsibilities

• Arrive at the agreed time, ready to work
• Give as much notice as possible if you are going to be late or can't come
• Contact appointed family advocate prior to attending if you have respiratory illness or symptoms of Covid -19 or other infectious illness
• Be discreet and confidential in matters relating to my mother, her home or family
• Agree not to pass on security information about my mother's home, to any person or Agency (eg. key safe code, security arrangements or internal layout of the property)
• Ensure all entrances and windows are secured on entry and departure
• Discuss any problems with us as soon as possible
• Agree to wearing PPE
• Agree to take lateral flow tests twice weekly (every 3 or 4 days)
• Respect our possessions /equipment and use them only with our consent
