Job Description
Who are we looking for?
As the Lead Electrical HV Distribution Engineer, you will provide technical and project leadership on projects of large significance or scale, influencing the direction of the organisation and/or external collaborators. You will provide specialist technical knowledge and direction in a complex field. This role will be extremely important in helping to shape the future of UKAEA at Culham and define the work we do on site post JET.
We are looking for an experienced degree qualified (or equivalent) electrical engineer with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills. If this is you, and you are good at decision making with the skills and ability to communicate and influence others, then we would be very keen to hear from you.
What will you be responsible for?
Leading Electrical Engineer (HV Systems):
- Proposing, defining, managing and delivering major projects or contracts (up to £10M) and leading project teams on enhancement programmes for site-wide facilities and future fusion devices
- Developing and implementing organisational [Level 6] as well as technical improvements [Level 5]
- Be appointed as Senior Authorised Person (Electrical) for HV systems [Level 6] or Authorised Person (Electrical) [Level 5]
- Accountable as the Asset Manager for UKAEA private HV substations, switchgear and distribution networks [Level 6] or Plant Responsible Officer [Level 5]
- Assume a position of technical expertise (and lead in setting the direction of site level projects in this capacity [Level 6]), acting as an authority and advisor for design solutions and/or critical plant operational issues
Please note that this role may involve working with and influencing external collaborators such as European or international laboratories, universities, strategic customers or suppliers and professional networks.
Please note that this role is split over two levels and the Level 5 offers a salary of £49,396 - £52,293 (inclusive of MPP) and the Level 6 offers a salary of £60,317 - £63,855 (inclusive of MPP). Your level will be assessed as part of the interview process.
Qualifications
Essential skills, experience and competence required
- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles
- Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties
- Extensive experience with high-power electrical systems with a size and rating as typically used in power stations and large industry
- A relevant Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent
- Good working knowledge of electrical engineering with specialist knowledge in HV substations and distribution power systems
- Experience with working to design standards and applying industry best practice
- Leading, coaching and supervising teams and other staff
- Good communication and technical writing skills
- Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience at leading and delivering major HV distribution projects (required at L.6)
- Extensive project management experience (for contracts up to a total value of £10,000,000 required at L.6)
Desirable skills, experience and competence
- Project management experience working on small-medium large-scale projects
