Job description

Do you have a mechanical engineering background with experience of leading complex engineering projects?

Would you like to be part of the UK's plan to produce the first commercially viable Fusion Reactor?

We need experienced Lead Engineers to join us on STEP (Spherical Tokamak Energy Programme).

You'll provide technical and project leadership on projects of large significance or scale, influencing the direction of the organisation and/or external collaborators. You will provide specialist technical knowledge and direction in a complex field. In your role you'll propose, define, manage and deliver major projects and lead project teams on enhancement programs, future fusion devices and applications of related technology. You serve as a point of authority in a certain discipline and advise on technical solutions, designs and/or critical plant operational issues.
Accountabilities:
* Accountable for leading projects on major fusion systems, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for CCFE's facilities as well as for future fusion devices.
* Specify and lead projects involving critical plant with site-wide implications. Such projects might be international/external.
* Accountable for ensuring timely delivery of assigned projects within specification, and informing and controlling project budgets. Manage all project activities and co-ordinate and deploy resources effectively. Authorise completion of project milestones and major documentation to ensure quality.
* Assume a position of technical expertise and lead in setting the direction of site level projects in this capacity, acting as an authority and advisor for design solutions and/or critical plant operational issues. This may include developing technical processes and/or operating procedures for the assigned area which are formally implemented by the business in day to day operations.
* In operational roles, act as responsible officer for safety or complex / critical plant and operations, for example Engineer in Charge on one of more of UKAEA's facilities. Has the authority to sanction or refuse actions in the interests of safety of personnel or asset protection on behalf of UKAEA.
* Develop and implement organisational as well as technical improvements. Ensure compliance within own team to management systems, policies and procedures.
* Competent in the application of analysis using classic and numerical methods to support design studies. Use engineering experience to foresee opportunities for business development, and contribute to related proposals and bids which may include submitting budgets and business cases.
* Use expertise and experience across a range of fields to analyse and critique engineering systems, recommending alternative design routes or courses of action, which may draw from an outside discipline or are truly novel.
* Build and maintain positive relationships with external parties such as European or international laboratories, universities, strategic customers or supplies, professional networks. Position and area of expertise are recognised by external parties.
* Communicate technical expertise by producing technical reports, departmental notes and journal / conference papers where relevant. Represent CCFE in external forums. Adapt communication style to suit a broad range of situations and receivers.
* Proactively transfer knowledge. Accountable for the development of more junior engineers in areas of expertise, using Coaching and Mentoring as tools or other approaches as deemed appropriate.
* The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that are reasonable and commensurate with this role that may not be specifically referred to in this document.
Budget Responsibility:
* Manage projects or responsible for contracts up to a value of ~several MEuro.
* Manage the following staff:
o Large project teams of:
? Engineers at all levels.
? Staff with technical expertise outside of the experience of the Job Holder.
? Drawing office personnel.
? Department technicians.
? On-site contractors, technicians, welders, fitters, wire men etc.
o Supervise the training and development of other engineers.
Specific Qualifications/Experience:
* A relevant engineering degree or equivalent.
* Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution.
* Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
* Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
* Experience with relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and transient magnetic fields.
* Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials.
* Experience with working to design standards (particularly pressure vessel standards).
* Leading teams and supervising other staff.
* Good communication and technical writing skills.
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
Other Duties:

As part of your role you could be asked to work in radiation controlled areas or in beryllium controlled areas. Full training and medical assessments will be provided if this is necessary.
