Mechanical Design Engineer - Gauge and Fixture

Location: Shrewsbury, Telford, Newport, Shifnal, Broseley, Albrighton, West Midlands, Birmingham

Basic Rate: £30.00 to £35.00 per hour + 6 month contract + Immediate start

The Role:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager the Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the following:

This is initially a hands on problem solving role requiring an expert in the design and
functionality of quality gauges and fixtures
Review current fixtures with original suppliers to identify potential improvements for pick
up, locating and repeatability
Generation and management of suitable tooling specification documentation, creation of
a standardised Statement of Requirements Package for future gauge and fixture sourcing
Formal sign off for gauge and fixture design, final acceptance and ECM driven changes to
the SOR
Creation of SWI's for set up, calibration and usage of fixtures
Implementation of best practise and lessons learned
Accountability to ensure gauge and fixture remains within the agreed budgets
Create and implement a tooling sign off passport to ensure all required information is
handed over, to include 3D and 2D information including any layouts for cooling,
hydraulics, electrics. Operating manual, service instructions, Spares list, diagrams,
simulation results, and any other operations or maintenance requirements.
Apply design for Manufacturability (DFM) principals to evaluate product designs and
produce summary reports to support engineering and quoting activities
Initially a contract role but strong potential of a full time role
Promote the companies HSE policies across the department and plant.

Essential Experience:
Proficient with 2D AutoCAD plus 3D
SolidWorks and Catia software
POKE YOKE
Gauge and fixture Design background
strong GD&T knowledge
Strong Datum Structure and application knowledge
Proficient in Microsoft Office Packages
Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with customers

Desirable Experience:
ONC/HNC Apprenticeship or equivalent either in Mechanical or Electrical Eng'g
Six sigma
Root Cause Analysis
Lean Manufacturing experience
