Job description

I have an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer to join a multi award-wining building services consultancy based in their office in Surrey. As a company they have an exciting portfolio which includes financial, hotels as well as some of the most innovative residential and mix development projects in the UK and overseas.

The nature of the role will require a high degree of adaptability and flexibility. The role requires endless curiosity - the currency in this business is new ideas and you will only be able to generate these if you stay on top of your continuing professional development within the workplace and outside.

You will be required to demonstrate sound skills in engineering design and be comfortable working on projects from inception to completion, able to undertake various aspects with minimal supervision. You will assist the senior staff to prepare conceptual designs of HVAC systems, pipe work systems, plant sizing and selection and calculations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate a growing understanding of BSRIA BG6 and RIBA stages, Part L, BREEAM and renewable technologies.
  • Remain conversant with the CIBSE Guides.
  • Demonstrate a growing expertise in condition surveys/report writing (including pre-acquisition, vendor, dilapidations, etc.).
  • Demonstrate a reasonable understanding of other MEP engineering disciplines, other than your own, sufficient to understand their impact in the overall design, and converse at a reasonable level.
  • Ensure proficiency in the use of the following systems; Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Hevacomp or IES, Outlook.
  • Develop ability to use AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Support the senior staff in the design of safe, economical and reliable mechanical systems to meet the contractual scope of work and comply with the applicable standards and regulations.
  • Develop the preparation of clear and concise drawings, specifications and product schedules to define mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate mechanical design with other disciplines (e.g. architectural, structural, electrical) to minimise conflicts and avoid costly revisions.
  • Check tender submissions, drawings and technical submittals to ensure quality of products and equipment are in accordance with design.
  • Undertake site visits and monitor progress against the design with minimal supervision.
  • Assist subcontractors to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications and resolve problems during construction.
