Job description
We are looking for an experienced principal level Mechanical Engineer with specialism in Rotating Equipment for a 6 month contract role based near Walton on Thames with the potential for further extensions for what is a busy and thriving industry expert operating in the oil and gas sector.
This will start as soon as possible with regular office hours Monday - Friday with the possibility for flexibility to assist travelling contractors. A rate around £50-£55 PAYE is anticipated plus holiday pay, or via an Umbrella payroll organisation.

The successful candidate will execute technical aspects of the rotating equipment scope of work for an assigned project(s) including air separation and/or process gases facilities. Depending on the individual's past experience and the assigned project this will either be a supporting role to the Lead Machinery Engineer or serving as the Lead providing technical leadership and coordination of 1-3 other engineers (as appropriate) across our UK and India offices to deliver the assigned project scope.
Types of equipment that you will work with are broad ranging and depend on the project scope. Examples include centrifugal (geared and non-geared), reciprocating and screw compression, process pumps, utility pumps, cryogenic pumps, fans, gas and steam turbines, turbo-expanders and associated auxiliary equipment.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:
" Leading the execution for technical elements of critical rotating equipment on assigned projects during Basic and Detailed Engineering phases with responsibility for delivering committed work on-schedule and on-budget
" Representing the Machinery Engineering function in cross-functional project meetings including P&ID review, HAZOP, layout review and model review and ensuring timely close-out of assigned actions
" Preparing technical specification packages for enquiry/purchase and undertaking technical review, bid tabulation/evaluation and risk assessment of supplier proposals, coordinating the necessary cross-functional input to support this
" Liaising with other functions and coordinating cross-functional review of supplier drawings to facilitate integration of purchased equipment into the overall plant design compliant with company engineering standards and the project scope requirements
" Witnessing shop inspections and acceptance testing of purchased equipment
" Providing technical support throughout the project Construction and Commissioning phases retaining overall technical responsibility for equipment until successful handover to the customer
" Deputising for the Lead (where required)
" Providing feedback to continuously improve the competitiveness of internal engineering standards and work processes
The role will require international travel to suppliers and project sites. Approximately 20% of your time may be spent travelling with some extended durations at project job sites to support construction, commissioning and start-up of rotating equipment.
Background & Experience
" Minimum of degree level qualification in Mechanical Engineering (or related)
" Chartered status (CEng) or European Engineer (EurIng) status or be actively pursuing this
" Demonstrable experience in planning and leading the execution of rotating equipment with schedule and budget responsibility
" Demonstrable experience in the specification, evaluation and engineering of rotating equipment in an EPC project environment. Experience with API 617 geared and non-geared compressors (process gases including CO2), API 618 reciprocating compressors, API 619 screw compressors and supporting auxiliaries. Experience with cryogenic equipment would be an advantage
" Experience in workshop mechanical/performance testing and FATs for critical rotating equipment - and also Field experience in construction and commissioning phases.
" A demonstrable understanding of cross-functional interfaces and overcoming associated challenges in an EPC environment for processing facilities
" A dedicated and driven approach with a strong grasp of technical principals, excellent communication skills, ability to build strong working relationships, attention to detail and desire to continually learn, improve and contribute
" Experience in providing technical leadership and supervision to others would be an advantage (including multiple execution centres)
" A self-starter motivated by technical challenge with a passion for machinery excellence
" Experience in plant acoustics would be an advantage
