Job description

West Horsley Place is a Grade I listed mediaeval manor house and estate of great beauty and historic significance near West Horsley, Surrey. The manor house dates from 1425, though there has been a building on site since Saxon times. The house is currently on Historic England's Heritage At Risk Register.
The West Horsley Place Trust, formed in 2015, aims to repair the house, restore the gardens, and look after the 380-acre estate and 8 Grade II listed outbuildings to create a vibrant place for the performing and visual arts and the teaching of crafts.
We are seeking a vibrant, skilled Environment & Sustainability Manager to lead on the environment and sustainability agenda for West Horsley Place Trust. This will include progressing and consolidating thinking across the 380-acre estate on the agenda through conservation management; new sustainable partnerships with specific environmental, biodiversity and sustainability-focused organisations; and overseeing external consultants as might be required for new projects or activities.
The E&S Manager will work closely with the Estate Ranger & Gardener; Community Engagement & Project Coordinator; as well as reporting to and both advising and being advised by the Trust's Environment & Sustainability (E&S) Group.
External organisations and Partners include Surrey Wildlife Trust; the Woodland Trust, Surrey Hills AONB, Surrey County Council, and relevant consultants.
Main purpose of role
The Trust owns and is responsible for historic buildings and 380 acres of land within two Biodiversity Opportunity Areas in rural Surrey. We are committed to improving our site management through sustainable best practice and habitat restoration, bringing together a new Environmental and Sustainability Strategies and initiatives, which will likely be realised through several exciting partnerships. We want this role to help the Trust to now progress the next phase of strategic development to meet our new Carbon reduction (and net zero) targets - by 2026, 2030, and 2040.
This role will work in close daily collaboration with colleagues to deliver on this important agenda, creating momentum for environmental, sustainable, and biodiverse initiatives across West Horsley Place Trust and its Estate. Harnessing our creative ideas, this role will work in close liaison with the Director, the Board of Trustees' E&S Group and the Estate Ranger to manage, coordinate, supervise and monitor biodiversity; carbon reduction initiatives; conservation and sustainability activities to ensure efficient and timely delivery of program goals, objectives, and targets. These will range from habitats to sustainable heating, nature recovery to organisational change.
Main duties

  • Work with the Director and E&S Group to develop and sign off an Estate Environmental Management Strategy and create deliverable workplans related to the Trusts agreed environmental and sustainability aims
  • Work closely with colleagues to deliver partnerships on site, working closely with the Estate Ranger & Gardener to explore and agree specific and suitable places for new projects
  • Support the Arts, Heritage & Learning Manager and the Community Engagement & Projects Coordinator to ensure that delivery of our complementary NLHF-funded nature activities support wider E&S aims, including capturing data needed for evaluation purposes. In addition, to add to the impact of our existing Heritage without Barriers programme where it relates to the environment.
  • Secure new E&S strategic and project funding, by supporting or leading on development and bid-writing, where directed and where it relates to E&S, by writing project briefs, applications, and advising the Director and Development Coordinator (to be appointed) to inform the direction of WHPT's future/ other fundraising
  • Set and monitor new Environmental KPIs. Feed into development and delivery of the new Evaluation Framework where it relates to E&S
  • As part of the 'Environment Team' manage new projects and provide advice on existing projects managed by colleagues. In some cases including oversight of new environment and sustainability volunteers
  • Set up and host relevant internal and external meetings to bring stakeholders together, and clearly communicate actions and updates.
  • Progress and report on actions agreed by the E&S Group; providing updates to this Group, the wider staff Team and provide reports to the Board of Trustees alongside the E&S Group Chair.
  • Coordinate and measure a Whole Organisational Approach to Sustainability (WOAS)
Provide effective E&S training to the team or volunteers where required.
Relationships
  • Build on and support colleagues in managing existing positive relationships with environmental partners including Surrey Wildlife Trust. Grow new relationships with bodies such as Natural England, the Woodland Trust and others, initiating and responding to new opportunities arising through the partnerships.
  • Contribute information as required about E&S initiatives to any updates to tenants, parish and local councils, other local community groups - and work with the Marketing & Communications Officer to provide information suitable for press releases and social media.
  • Represent the Trust at forums and events, online and offline, related to the E&S agenda as appropriate.
People Management
  • The Environment & Sustainability Manager (ESM) will not directly line-manage a staff member but work as part of an Environment Team, in a matrix-function, reporting to the Director. They may in future manage a member of staff or trainee, as the organisation grows and develops.
Health and Safety, and the built environment
  • Comply with the Health & Safety policy of the Trust and risk assessment controls in place, and support the Operations Manager in identifying risks for the registers for the Trust and its E&S activities.
  • Work safely ensuring the safety of self and others working alongside them
  • Work with the E&S Group; House & Operations Manager and House Officer to support, advise and for specific projects, deliver on, carbon reduction and sustainable heating initiatives across the Estate's buildings
Financial
The Environment & Sustainability Manager will be:
  • Responsible for effectively utilising and managing a E&S budget to agreed limits and co-manage the Estate budget with the Estate Ranger;
  • Keep appropriate financial records as required by the Director, Treasurer and the Administrator;
  • Provide project financial information in a timely way as required by the Director, Treasurer and Administrator.
General
  • Assist generally with the work of the Trust in a culture where all colleagues seek to assist and support each other in their roles and work.
