Job description

Our client is a manufacturer of specialised imaging detectors and systems covering a diverse range of industries from aerospace to biomedical, currently employing approximately 60 people. Applications for such detectors include the detection of single photons and ultrafast cameras capable of sub nanosecond exposure times. The other side of the business a fast-growing specialist imaging equipment manufacturer based in East Sussex. The company has 20 employees.
The current and planned growth of both companies has created the need to hire an Operations Manager to oversee both sites.
As a manufacturer of highly technical and high-performance optical detectors and cameras both companies are continually improving their technology and product range. A strong Operations Manager is required to ensure that products are manufactured and business processes are executed in a manner to achieve company objectives.
The incumbent will have overall responsibility for the production, planning, materials management, and engineering support to production across both facilities. The position is supported by direct reports for each production area, stockroom, purchasing, engineering, and facilities management. The role is a member of the Senior Management Team and will participate in Senior Management meetings and help steer company policy.

1. Manufacturing Management
1. Manage Production department to achieve production and quality targets
2. Ensure shipping revenue targets are met
3. Maintain production operations to lean manufacturing practices, including 5S and just in time approaches
4. Perform quality controls and monitor production KPI aimed at improving production performance
5. Work with Sales and Marketing to establish long-term production plan
6. Work with R&D and Engineering to ensure smooth transition of products from R&D into production
7. Monitor manufacturing cycle times and efficiencies
8. Develop and implement cycle time and efficiency improvement programmes
9. Monitor manufacturing yield
10. Develop and implement manufacturing yield improvement programmes
11. Participate in company Health & Safety committee and take lead on H&S in the factory
12. Oversee facilities management with support of facilities supervisor
2. Inventory Control
1. Manage purchasing department
2. Manage and control inventory levels
3. Liaise with Finance re: stock adjustments and usage
3. Facilities Management
1. Oversee facilities management
2. Work with Finance to budget capital equipment spend and equipment maintenance schedule
4. Human Resource
Leadership
1. Promote and uphold company performance standards and ideology (quality, continuous improvement, housekeeping & work ethic).
2. Uphold and manage expected standards of behaviour and attitude in line with Company HR policies and procedures, particularly the Staff Code of Conduct, Promoting Dignity at Work and the Disciplinary Policy and Procedure.
3. To manage staff in line with Company policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance.
4. To set employee goals and objectives in line with appraisal and supervision policies and procedures for maximum potential and performance.
5. To train and develop staff to achieve maximum performance and workforce planning
6. Delegate work duties to staff for development and performance efficiency.
7. To have regular team meetings to engage and communicate with staff for effective working relationships and achieving business plan and customer service excellence
Staff Training & Development
1. To participate in staff development, training and performance appraisals to ensure continuous professional development.
2. Keep professionally updated by attending regular training updates.
3. Maintain knowledge acting consistently with both the agencies and other regulatory organisations.
4. Identify external appropriate training opportunities and technical resources which will be beneficial to the company.
5. Attend appropriate training identified through appraisal and supervision to show a commitment to continuous develop and to ensure appropriate levels of skill and knowledge is maintained to ensure business plan is achieved.
6. Attendance at supervision and appraisal sessions as required.
7. To attend team meetings and apply consistently the principles of Equal Opportunities as embodied within policies and procedures.
