Job description

Head of Health, Safety, Sustainability and Environment (HSSE) - Upper tier COMAH sites

£90 to £112K + car allowance + excellent bonus and benefits

Location: Hybrid - working from home and GB wide travel along with Head office in Warwickshire

You will lead the HSSE team within GB, working across all areas of the business to ensure the organisation meets its legislative requirements to operate; setting the strategy for HSSE with the senior team, and implementing via operational management; developing and implementing a culture which makes health and safety the top priority for all employees, and which drives continuous improvement. In tandem with this, to coordinate closely with and align to the Global Group Health and Safety Function to support the delivery of Group targets for safety.

The role:

Provide the whole company with insight and analysis* to stakeholders across the business (including the Management Team) to enable the company to deliver continual improvement in its HSSE performance.

By means of leading and lagging indicators and the outcome of the departments audit and inspection program.

The Head of HSSE shall provide assurance to the CEO and Senior Management Team that the GB business meets all legal and Group relevant behavioural and process safety standards and has agreed action plans in place to address any deficiencies or major risks.

On behalf of the CEO, manage and maintain the Safety Management and Environmental Management Systems (SMS, EMS) to ensure they comply with relevant legislation and the requirements of ISO 45001 and 14001 respectively. Ensure that they are reviewed regularly and accessible to the business.

In their role as primary contact, the Head of HSSE will manage external relationships with relevant HSSE related bodies (e.g. H&S Executive, Environment Agencies, NCTSO ISO,) to ensure the organisation is legislatively compliant and maintains a good relationship with the Competent Authorities and security agencies.

Lead a team of HSSE professionals within the business, providing them with necessary guidance and motivation to ensure they deliver their objectives, outlined in the SMS and EMS, in an effective and impactful manner, and develop their skills and ability to contribute over a period of time.

Devise and execute strategies and campaigns with internal and external support to improve the HSSE performance of the GB business in line with its long term goals.

Work with and cooperate with the National Engineering function to ensure that Process Safety (including COMAH compliance) is managed in according with legislation and organisation's Process Safety Policy by providing governance of the Process Safety activities.

Play a lead role across the Global Group to ensure the achievement of Group safety targets, and ensure that GB practice aligns with the global Safety Strategy.

Represent GB on relevant external committees in order to ensure interests are looked after within the wider industrial and legislative contexts.

For serious HSSE incidents act as the lead investigator to ensure they are thoroughly investigated in accordance with the incident investigation procedure (HS-Q-06) and that immediate and root causes are identified, and actions put in place to prevent re-occurrence.

Ensure best practise from relevant industry and Group is applied within GB to continuously improve the maturity of their safety systems, processes and behaviours.

Be responsible for Security Policies and Procedures to ensure levels of suitable security levels are maintained at all sites. For its COMAH sites, ensure security levels are maintained in line with government guidelines.

The person:

Degree educated as a minimum

Engineering qualifications minimum degree level ideally MEng or Chemical Engineering

Experience of having worked in a HSSE role for a GB wide (or similar geographical area), multi-site organisation in a production / distribution environment, potentially in a high hazard environment.

A Root Cause Analysis qualification

Excellent communication skills to deliver HSSE messages throughout the organization

A NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety or equivalent;

Chartered Membership of IOSH or equivalent

A demonstrable proven leadership track record in achieving results, within the area of HSSE within

Experience of managing a budget

Experience of Process Safety Management Systems and working within a COMAH environment - including knowledge and experience of managing COMAH Safety Reports.

Operated within an ISO 45001 and ISO14001 company

Experience of having reported to a senior management team, and having managed complex strategic agendas across whole organizations

Leadership skills proven capability to coach and mentor teams to be the best

Experience of interfacing with Competent Authorities such as HSE, EAs, DfT.

Experience in Crisis Management and Emergency Response

Development of short and long term strategic programmes, for instance in behavioural or cultural change
