Job description

I am currently recruiting for a major contractor currently working on a number of SMART Motorway projects across England within the SMP Alliance framework. They require Design Managers to join their site teams and offer detailed design expertise.

You will manage the design aspects of allocated projects currently in progress, this will involve spending a significant proportion of time co-located with the design team as the point of contact for National Contractor and to provide guidance on potential design solutions, with regard to constructability, products and cost effectiveness. The Design Manager must understand the overall situation and not necessarily all of the details.

You will report to the Bid Manager, Senior Design Manager and Project Manager, ensuring that any design solutions you suggest is safe to construct, maintain and operate.

Principal responsibilities and accountabilities:

Promote and present a professional Contractor image to the customer in all dealings, to become the main point of contact for design throughout the tender, design and / or construction phase
Brief the appointed design team and issue all relevant documentation
Ensure that the following are reviewed and agreed: the scope of services, terms of appointment, design agreement, design programme, level of detail of drawings and specifications, document protocol, fee and payment arrangements, change control arrangements, lines of communication
Manage the Professional Services Contract / Design Agreement - Oversee the "spend" by the design team, review forecast against programme and budget, advise on variances and manage change as agreed with Commercial Manager
Ensure that design growth/development risk is properly considered and assessed
Actively promote the integration and development of BIM as part of the design process
Ensure compliance of the design with the CDM Regulations and Environmental requirements
Contribute to identification and development of Winning Strategies
Ensure that all customer information, knowledge and winning strategy are translated into the design activity
Facilitate and lead design management meetings and workshops
Facilitate the development of the most economically advantageous design at any stage in the process by challenging the design team to consider alternatives. Engage with Engineering Managers as necessary.
Ensure design process runs smoothly and that inputs and outputs are made in a controlled and planned manner at both tender design and contract design phases
Coordinate all interface activity with design consultants between Client, contractors staff, supply chain partners, stakeholders and external consultants / suppliers with design responsibility
Lead in Value Engineering in liaison with Engineering Manager and ensure other relevant personnel contribute and agree decisions and that they are recorded before alternatives are pursued
Ensure that key supply chain partners / stakeholders are brought into the process at the appropriate time
Ensure the customers feedback and comments are acknowledged, prioritized and actioned
Ensure that all information required by either party is supplied by the other at the correct time and to the agreed and appropriate level of detail
Monitor the efficiency of the consultants processes and release blockages where evident
Translate lessons learnt and good practice from previous work into current activity
Ensure the effective implementation of Design Management Procedure
Continually review consultants performance and share information
Audit design process and procedures and ensure any subsequent actions are carried out
