Job description
Here at NHS Digital we are looking at major change in our tech hosting arrangements, and are looking to hire someone who has strong Linux expertise to lead the migration from corporate hosting to AWS hosting solution.
The role sits in the Deployment Issue Resolution (DIR) team, which is a multi-disciplinary technical team tasked with administering a number of national services and have a range of internally developed tools to support these activities. A tech trouble shooting team.
The team are seeking a diverse development lead with the capability to modernise their tooling platform and play a key role in transitioning such tools to AWS. Whilst predominantly a LAMP-based stack, experience with a range of programming/scripting languages would be of considerable benefit, including Swift/Kotlin for mobile apps. Experience with the Laravel PHP framework would also be considered highly desirable, in addition to working with a variety of data back-ends including SQL and LDAP. PHP is our main go-to, but elements of C, Java, C#, Python can often land unexpectedly so breadth and versatility are key to the role. Being able to rapidly skill-up in any given area is considered of more value than being typecast as an expert with a narrow field of expertise.
The ability to line manage and mentor other colleagues would also be of considerable benefit.
As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer you will:
- Lead the migration from corporate hosting to AWS hosting solution. Modernise NHS Digital's tooling platform and play a key role in transitioning such tools to AWS
- Build platforms rather than letting them evolve, and transition platforms from one to the other
- Line manage, coach and mentor other colleagues
Some of the key skills and experience you'll bring to the role:
- Highly developed specialist knowledge and expertise across multiple areas, acquired through a combination of specialist training, relevant study and experience, covering the following areas:
- Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems.
- IP networks, routing, firewalls, Citrix and web application deployment, proxy services, LDAP, DNS, PKI and smartcard-based security services, network and server architectures, middleware.
- Extensive knowledge of enterprise class service platforms.
- Solid understanding of estate management technologies.
- Experience of directory, web service and interoperable messaging standards.
- Experience in the use of programming/scripting languages to construct bespoke applications and repeatable processes.
- Evidence of consistently delivering complex programmes/projects on target.
- Extensive knowledge of Service Management processes and methodologies.
- Good knowledge of what is involved in managing products and services across their lifecycle.
- Ability to coach and develop team members
- a role as part of a dynamic team using data and digital technology to transform health and care
- a range of opportunities to build your experience in an environment where your work has a direct and positive impact
- a real commitment to your personal and professional development with access to a broad range of learning opportunities
