Job description

Do you have experience of developing volunteer programmes? Are you passionate, creative and self-motivated?

At Science Museum Group, we are passionate about providing our diverse audiences with a great day out, and to help us achieve this we invite individuals to volunteer, using their passion and enthusiasm to enhance the experience of our visitors, improve access to our world-class collections and provide support behind the scenes.

To help us continue the expansion of our volunteering programme, we are looking for a Volunteering Manager to join the team at the National Railway Museum in York on a full-time permanent basis. As Volunteering Manager, you will have the unique opportunity to take an already successful volunteer programme to the next level, ensuring volunteering is deeply embedded and valued in all our ways of working, and in our ambitious plans for future development.

A true champion for volunteers, you will lead the development and delivery of the volunteer programme, engaging colleagues, and stakeholders across the Group. You will be responsible for all the aspects of the Volunteering Programme, managing the full life cycle from recruitment and training to supporting Supervisors and evaluating the programme.

Joining us, you will have experience of developing and delivering large scale volunteering projects or strategies. In addition to your knowledge of the volunteering sector, you will have strong relationship-building and excellent communication skills whilst being organised, flexible, self-motivated and enthusiastic about your work. You will be able to think creatively about recruiting volunteers for new streams of work, influencing improved ways of working and ensuring volunteering is considered as a resourcing option by your stakeholders.

The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world's leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.

'Open for All' is one of the Science Museum Group's five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
