Job description
Job Summary:
Perform standard clinical laboratory analysis for amino acids, acylcarnitine species, organic acids, and other analytes utilizing automated and manual techniques: Duties of associate chemist title include: Prepare samples, standards, and reagents to be used in performing this analysis. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation used in performing these analyses. Acquire, organize, and report the data to the supervisor. Determine acceptability of results based on quality control/assurance parameters. Report test results and communicate results to providers. Additional duties of chemist title include: Participate in maintaining compliance with clinical laboratory testing regulating entities (CAP or CLIA). Ensure adequate supply of reagents, controls, and materials needed to complete testing within the assigned section and perform evaluation of new lots. Assist in evaluating new methods and instrumentation. Assist with assay improvements.
Development/Miscellaneous duties: Assist in evaluating new methods or instrumentation. Demonstrate and provide exceptional customer services by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisors, co-workers and all customers. Provide assistance where needed to other sections of the NBS laboratory. Other duties as assigned.
Training and education activities. Provide bench level instruction to new employees and/or students. Assist in maintaining current and up-to-date standard operating procedures. Demonstrate and provide exceptional customer service.

Education:
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Medical Laboratory Technology or related field is required.
Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards required.
Qualifications:
Experience in a clinical laboratory or newborn screening laboratory is preferred. A minimum of three years to five years of working experience in a clinical laboratory is required for Chemist II title. A minimum of three years to five years of working experience in mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and/or high performance liquid chromatography applications is required for Chemist II title.

Hours for this position are M-F 8:30-5:00pm or Tuesday - Saturday 8:30-5pm. Weekend and holiday work, on a rotating basis, is required.
