Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 year(s) of experience in a laboratory or comparable setting
requiring sample receipt, sample preparation, and laboratory information
management system (LIMS) operation, preferably in a radioanalytical laboratory.
OR BA/BS Degree in Biology, Chemistry or other science related education
Experience with screening instruments or other related equipment used to
receive, prepare, and count samples. Experience with general laboratory
equipment such as balances, thermometers, etc., is also preferred.
Experience required with MS Word, Excel, Access, SharePoint, Copying
Machine, Scanner
Microsoft Outlook; Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) preferred
but not required
Duties:
Perform duties in the Sample Receiving/Preparation areas to include shipping,
receiving and processing environmental samples for radio chemical analysis,
assisting with daily instrument checks and maintenance, as well as other
assigned duties. Applicant must have previous laboratory experience.
Performs tasks associated with shipping and receiving samples 30%
Tracks and prepares samples for radiochemical analyses and counting,
including drying, ashing, and grinding. This includes preparing samples for
gamma analysis - water and soil. 30%
Logs samples into a Laboratory Information Management System
(LIMS). 10%
Maintains Sample Preparation paperwork in appropriate files and archive and
manage records as required. Establishes and maintains a clean workplace in the
Sample Receipt and Preparation and sample storage disposal labs. 10%
Operates and maintains NAREL's RadNet Precipitation Monitoring 5%
Performs daily QC check and routine maintenance on laboratory
equipment. 5%
Disposes of samples. 5%
Maintains supply inventory for Sample Receipt & Prep. 3%
Receives packages from FedEx, UPS, etc. 2%
Other:
Radiation Safety, Health & Safety training, QA and ethics, information
security, and any other EPA directed training.
On-the-job training, as well as in-house training sponsored by NAREL
Health Safety Training: In accordance with EPA 1440.2, Health and Safety
Requirements for Employees Engaged in Field Activities. General Health & Safety
training for performing work in a laboratory environment. Radiation Safety
training for working with sealed radioactive sources or samples. Principles of
Forklift Operation will be provided as necessary
Health and Safety Considerations: Training will be provided by the NAREL
Safety, Health & Environmental Management (SHEM) staff, the Radiation Safety
Officer (RSO) and forklift operation by a "Train the Trainer" Forklift
Instructor
Lifting equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, climbing
steps/stairways,and working heat and cold at times for short periods of time.
Potential for low dosage radiation exposure and exposure to some acids and
preservatives
Required Safety Gear: Safety glasses, gloves and laboratory coats,
Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TDL) badge and/or oxygen monitor
Safety Gear Use: When handling chemicals and samples and when using overs
muffle furnaces,and liquid gas.
