Summary

Serves as senior legal counsel to oversee the Company's response to employment questions and matters, including policy/practice advice and counsel, response to administrative agency complaints, and litigation involving individual or collective claims.

Essential Functions

* Leads the Company's response to employment claims and litigation, including administrative agency responses and attendance at mediation, arbitration, and litigation activities, within the Company's seven-state footprint.

* Engages and manages outside counsel within area of responsibility in a cost-effective manner, including strategy, budget development/management, drafting and review of pleadings and other legal documents, and document collection/review.

* Provides substantive area expertise on a broad range of employment issues, including ADA, FMLA, wage and hour/FLSA; employee/contractor classification issues; discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims; workplace safety/security (including COVID-19); and workers compensation matters.

* Performs risk evaluation and exposure assessments to develop strategy and advise internal business partners.

* Mentors and trains junior attorneys and paralegals.

* Develops and conducts training programs for supervisors, managers, and employees.

* Computer skills, MS Office, Google Workspace (including Vault), and online legal research tools such as Casetext.

Education & Experience / Licenses & Certification

* BA/BS - Bachelor's degree in related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

* J.D. from accredited university.

* California or Utah State Bar license in good standing. SHRM certification a plus.

* 7 years' experience advising clients in a law firm or an in-house law department, including advising on complex litigation matters. Some organized labor experience preferred.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

Works in an office environment sitting at a desk, table or computer workstation for extended periods of time. May travel by car, plane or other form of transportation to attend business meetings or conferences. Approximately 50-80 percent of the time spent on the job involves the use of a personal computer.
