Position: Manager, Communications and Digital Media

Location: Remote within California. (Los Angeles or Sacramento Preferred)

Description of Job: The Communications and Digital Media Manager will be responsible for multicultural and Spanish language earned media and earned media outreach and results, including developing and implementing public relations and social media campaigns in Spanish language. As part of CCSA's External Affairs team, the individual will be involved in the development and execution of CCSA's internal and external multicultural communications strategies and related efforts.

Overview of Responsibilities

The Communications and Digital Media Manager will report to the Senior Director, Communications to support the External Affairs team in media relations and public affairs campaigns focused primarily on Spanish language and Latinx community engagement. As a member of the External Affairs team, working closely with the media relations team members, the individual will be both a strong strategist and advisor, as well as key writer and storyteller, rolling up their sleeves to support the drafting of original copy and digital media (including graphics, video and audio production) that drives engagement within a LatinX market.

The Communications and Digital Media Manager will work closely with CCSA's Local Advocacy team, identifying regional student, parent and community stories that can be used for digital and/or earned media opportunities. In collaborating with the Local Advocacy team, the Manager will also attend community events (online or in-person), offering communications support while further identifying other earned media or digital profile platforms.

The Manager must be creative, a self-starter and able to write for different audiences and in different formats for a variety of platforms, including blog format, marketing emails, newsletters, social media content, press releases, media advisories and statements and op-eds. They will use the stories of charter students, families, and educators and tell their stories using diverse communications platforms. And in an effort to develop our overall earned and digital LatinX voice, the Manager will support cross-team translation efforts and opportunities.

Essential Duties

Support the External Affairs Team's Media related goals and priorities:

  • Support communications team goals to increase multilingual and multicultural earned media coverage.
  • Produce Spanish language content that supports CCSA's ongoing communications campaigns tailored specifically to LatinX audiences.
  • Maintain media tracking profile and execute daily dissemination of relevant news media coverage.
  • Identify, develop and execute a LatinX earned media strategy that aligns with the team's overarching strategic priorities.
  • Support planning and execution of press conferences (digital or in-person), and other public events including CCSA's annual conference.
  • Support the Communications team and any cross-team partners in LatinX content development, translation support or community outreach that strengthens CCSA's on-the-ground advocacy and surrogate operation efforts.
  • Regularly monitor Spanish language news media platforms (newspapers, TV, radio, social, online) for stories that may impact the organization and/or present an opportunity for promotion of charter public school stories.
  • Cultivate and maintain LatinX media relationships and media list/database.
  • Respond to LatinX media requests and coordinate interviews.
  • Recognize opportunities and develop materials using traditional and digital communications platforms that tell the stories of charter school students, families, educators and communities.

Support the External Affairs Team's digital and graphic design goals and priorities:

  • Support development of a LatinX engagement strategy that leverages our primary digital channels: social media, blog, general web-based assets and email programs.
  • Provide design direction on creating original graphics, videos or other assets that can be leveraged for both Spanish media as well as English media.
  • Assist in the production of day-to-day graphic design needs for digital campaigns, content blitzes, newsletters, bulk emails, lead nurturing programs or organic social media with an eye to a Latinx audience.
  • Design LatinX content that can work for our audiences while also being flexible enough to be contextualized for local or regional targets.

Support the Association's overall communications objectives through:

  • Increase public awareness and support of charter public schools.
  • Empower charter school parents, leaders and teachers to tell their own stories in ways that build support for charter schools and the sector's advocacy priorities.
  • Facilitate cooperative relationships with educational, public sector, and community organizations as well as other opinion leaders to project a positive image of the charter sector and CCSA.
  • Consult with and advise Association staff on the most effective means of informing stakeholders on matters of particular interest and sensitivity.
  • Visit charter schools to identify stories to share through a variety of communications means
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Communications or designee.

Provides support as appropriate to CCSA Advocates-CCSA's tandem 501(c)4 organization-with campaign efforts at the local and state level.

  • Self-starter with exceptional decision making, strategic thinking, project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop, foster, and sustain relationships with reporters, member school communications staffs and public relations teams and members of the charter public school community.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to a diversity of audiences in ways that are appropriate to those audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate well with others and to support CCSA's mission.
  • Bring insight and a practical lens to places where identity, equity, and power intersect with the work. Recognizes the ways that their own and others' identities show up and play out in the work.

Required Capabilities

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish, native Spanish speaker.
  • Minimum 1-year relevant experience with broadcast media relations and social media with a proven track record for presenting and securing positive earned media news coverage and online/social media followers.
  • Excellent presentation, public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write fluently, with context, for Spanish speaking audiences across California.
  • Excellent with social media communications tools, including Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Excellent in working with graphic design tools.
  • Excellent quality control and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple communications projects at once with ease and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with graphic design, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite and/or video production.

Preferred Capabilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Affairs, Journalism or related field.
  • Some work with video editing, or comfort with taking on video editing.
  • Experience with earned media tracking services, specifically Cision and Trendkite.
  • Established relationships with Spanish language media outlets in California.
  • Experience working at a non-profit or advocacy-related organization.
  • Familiarity or have had an experience with charter schools or education reform.

Benefits and Salary
Salary for this position starts at $51,330 annually. Selected candidates will be offered a starting salary based on years of aligned experience and any specialized training or certifications (if preferred for the position).
