Position: EHS Specialist III
Reports to: Site EHS Leader
Location: Carlsbad, CA
Essential Functions:
- Management of select EHS programs in a fast paced, cross-functional and highly collaborative environment.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and administrator for assigned programs.
- Utilize Lean tools and principles (Kaizen, Gemba, RCCM, etc.) to drive Continuous Improvement of EHS programs.
- Engage site functional teams and leadership to prioritize initiatives and resources to achieve EHS objectives.
- Provide in-person safety trainings to support regulatory compliance and new hire training.
- Manage Workers' Compensation Program including record management, investigation, evaluation, monitoring claim at different levels, reducing cost, and actively communicating with management personnel, HR, medical providers, and insurance adjusters.
- Support management of site emergencies such as spills, evacuations and medical emergencies.
- Act as a liaison to employees needing ergonomic evaluations. Coordinate ergonomic evaluations and assist in improvement recommendations.
- Respond to departmental inquires and concerns in a timely manner while providing quality resolution.
- Promote, reinforce, and sustain a safety-first culture through involvement, innovation, and engagement.
- Support compliance with Thermo Fisher Scientific global EHS management system and regulatory requirements applicable to the site.
- Develop, review and refine EHS programs and processes to meet the changing needs of the business.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to solve site related hazards (chemical, biological, physical, electrical, slip/trip/fall, confined space, ergonomic, radioactive, etc.).
- Partner with site training management team to develop, refine, and deliver training content for EHS programs.
- Provide EHS expertise and guidance to promote proper execution and closure of SHED entries.
- Coordinate with outside vendors for site services as required.
- Interface with Thermo Fisher Scientific Global EHS and regulatory agencies on EHS matters to maintain a strong collaborative environment to ensure compliance and best practice implementation.
- Effective presentation skills both written and verbal to diverse audiences.
- Manage and maintain EHS intranet page (iConnect).
- Support site internal/external/regulatory audits.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in life sciences or engineering discipline, or five years of directly relevant industry expertise.
- Certified in OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry or be willing to take steps to gain required certification.
- Professional certification: CSP, CIH a plus.
Experience/Requirements:
- Minimum three years of experience in environmental, health and safety in a life sciences industry.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and professional discretion with confidential subject matter.
- Ability to effectively communicate with employees, people leaders, and medical professionals regarding workers' compensation claims.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology related to the cause and treatment of occupational injuries and diseases.
- Understand, interpret and follow laws, ordinances, regulations and procedures in relation to workers' compensation.
- Comfortable addressing employees at all levels of the organization individually and/or in group settings.
- Ability to work independently, appropriately prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with various computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Forms, Power Automate, MS Teams etc.).

Working Conditions:
Many duties are performed while sitting/standing at a desk, but also include walking and standing in office and manufacturing environments, occasionally for hours depending on the circumstance.
