Financial Counselor (Admitting) - Full Time, Days (Culver City)

The Financial Counselor informs patients of their financial responsibility and collects co-pays, deductibles, and cash flat rates for services being rendered. Provides estimates to physicians on inpatient/outpatient surgical procedures. Communicates with social workers and case management regarding patient financial status. Provides relief to patient access staff and performs other duties as necessary.
Job Responsibilities/Duties
- Collect deposits and payments from patients, monitors private pay patients, and assists patients who have questions about bills and statements. Prepares, documents, and completes computer input of patient accounts in a timely manner. Maintains confidentiality with regard to patients, families, employees, and visitors.
- Tracks collections to ensure appropriate amounts are being collected, and documents reasons for non-collections. Follows up as appropriate with patients. Provides cash collection updates to management in a timely manner.
- Interfaces directly with the social workers and case management department to address patient and/or patient placement issues. Escalates any unresolved financial issues to hospital administrator/CEO or other appropriate party.
- Works directly with outside government agencies, when appropriate, to follow up on status of applications and details of patient coverage.
- Identifies all patients that require financial assistance during the initial visit to hospital. Explains the Charity Program process and required documentation needed for the application.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelors Degree preferred.
Minimum Experience: Three (3) years of admitting/registration office experience required. Basic Understanding of Medical Terminology required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Strong time management skills. Ability to multitask and maintain a work pace appropriate to workload. Computer literacy and proficiency. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families preferred.
