Responsibilities:
The Hospital Patient Access / HIM Specialist (Part Time) working under the supervision of the Patient Access / HIM Manager, is responsible for properly admitting and registering patients according to departmental standard operating procedures. The Associate is responsible for making the Revenue Cycle process as pleasant as possible, for patients and their families. Will follow all HIPAA and other compliance guidelines, as well as all local, state, and federal regulations. Will be instrumental in communicating with other departments within the facility. Must accurately collect and input patient information into the HIS (health information system) to ensure accurate patient identification, complete and accurate billing, guarantee complete and accurate medical record attainment, collect patient liability (POS), and make referrals to Financial Counselors, where appropriate. Will be responsible for multitasking to ensure that the processes within the patient access department are completed daily. This position will also work in the medical records department processing and maintaining patient charts. This position will work three weekends per month with various shifts.
Patient Access (Hospital Admissions) Responsibilities:
Obtains and accurately enters all required data elements for Revenue Cycle, including patient demographic, financial, guarantor information, admitting/presenting diagnosis, and relevant notes associated with the encounter.
Register/Admits patients efficiently as possible allowing for a positive overall patient experience.
Accurately identifies patient and associates them with their existing medical record or creatse a new one when it does not already exist.
Works according to standard operating procedure, including use of additional resource tools provided (e.g. AccuReg/Experian) and during HIS downtimes.
Responsible for communicating with patients regarding patient liabilities when due and collecting according to POS policy.
Performs Presumptive Eligibility as appropriate in accordance with state guidelines.
Refers patients for financial counseling, when appropriate.
Collects and documents all data required in the HIS to attain acceptable initial and final accuracy rates (refer to QA policy).
Completes insurance eligibility and verification of benefits and determines the need for and authorization/pre-certification for any non-scheduled, non-ED patients, or for patients who were not fully pre-registered and financially cleared (refer to pre-Revenue Cycle, authorization, insurance eligibility and benefits verification, and financial clearance policies).
Selects appropriate patient type based on the physician's order, department of service, and/or services required.
Communicates the purpose of and obtains patient/legal guardian signatures on all necessary hospital documents. Knowledgeable of all related documents, including, but not limited to:
Hospital consent forms
Assignment of benefits
Financial Assistance Application
Advance Directive
Patient Rights
Ensures orders are received and are consistent with tests/procedures.Verifies eligibility and obtains necessary authorizations for services rendered.
Completes Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire.
Utilizes online eligibility
Obtains authorization/ verification of required insurance companies, including Medicare ABN
Meets with patients and/or authorized/legal family member(s) to obtain valid insurance coverage, if applicable, and/or review prior account information to obtain insurance coverage. Enters notes on the patient's account upon completion of the communication event.
Educates, screens, and assists patients who do not have valid insurance coverage to enroll in third-party eligibility programs.
Documents all calls, correspondence, and related activities to each patient's account in the correct place using appropriate tools and language.
Scans insurance(s) and photo identification to the correct patient medical record.
Must maintain open and positive written and verbal professional communication always
Health Information Management (Medical Records Management) Responsibilities:
Processes patient charts (prep, scan, and index) including off-site scanning support to clinic groups
Assists with scheduled chart pickup runs to nursing units
Acts as Receptionist for the Departmen
Escalates issues as needed
Maintains records and filing systems
Operates various office machines including printers, computers and various software packages
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
Successful completion of the core educational curriculum for Guidehouse Patient Access must be completed within six months of employment
Must have basic knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to read and comprehend in English
Demonstrate excellent customer service skills
Strong communication and organizational skils
Ability to apply principles of process improvement
Must be able to follow detailed instructions and perform repititious tasks
Computer/basic keyboard skills, telephone skills, and general knowledge of office machines including printers, fax, copier, scanner and credit card machings
Must complete annula Workplace Violence Preveniton Program Certificate per hospital polcy during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer
BLS Certified (facility required within three months of hire date)
Preferred:
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
