Job description
VP of Finance and Business Service (VPFBS) , in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior leadership of the organization, sets the vision for high quality, equity-focused and innovative operations across the PNEDG, CNCA, and Grupo Nuevo Los Angeles (GNLA) corporate structure.
The VPFBS is responsible for overseeing school facilities and the financial management of the three corporations: ensuring that individual departments within PNEDG, GNLA real estate, and schools operated by CNCA achieve financial goals that align with the mission of the organization. The VPFBS will ensure the quality and continual improvement of financial operations with particular emphasis on internal controls, treasury management, federal and state regulations, efficient accounting processes, reliable budget development and implementation, and rigorous evaluation of network finances.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Vision Setting Responsibilities
- Advise the CEO on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy matters.
- Collaborate with the CEO and other senior leadership within the organization to identify key needs, outline opportunities, and define a financial strategy.
- Engage with the Finance Advisory Group of the Board of Directors on matters related to financial oversight and strategy.
- Present financial information for PNEDG, CNCA, and GNLA board meetings and additional constituencies.
- Represent organization to banking partners, lenders, investors, external stakeholders, and public officials.
- Develop and manage internal budgets with back office service providers.
- Establish and manage annual and long-term budgeting process with leadership & staff
- Perform regular evaluation of each department's budget and seek explanation and resolution for variances.
- Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures and ensure they are regularly updated in our handbook and standard operating procedures.
Team Leadership and Performance Management Responsibilities
- Lead all financial functions for the organization in collaboration with internal and external partners. .
- Oversee all facilities-related activities, including developing the overall strategy for managing the school's facilities infrastructure consistent with short term and long-term planning needs.
- Supervise and provide ongoing coaching to and developing of the Director of Facilities including annual goal setting processes, periodic step backs, and consistent coaching meetings.
- Develop team capacity, build strong relationships, and determine immediate and future needs to ensure the finance team structure continues to serve the organization's mission and goals.
- Partner with Principals to manage, coach and train and oversee the development and monitoring of campus budgets.
- Collaborate to develop and coherent professional development plans that support standards of excellence for organizational operations across the organization.
- Build positive relationships with all stakeholders.
- Set ambitious personal and professional goals and model relentless effort toward these goals.
Administrative Management and Compliance Responsibilities
- Oversee the application process for government funding requests.
- Ensure uniform and accurate budgeting and reporting required by the organization budgeting standards.
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions and remain up to date on nonprofit charter school audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
- Monitor dashboards for Home Support Office and CNCA schools' financial performance to proactively oversee health/efficiency of campus budgets and balance sheets.
- Act as an advisor and resource for schools when questions arise regarding budgets, financial reports, accounts payable invoices, and other accounting/finance related matters
- Through relationships with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), and the California Department of Education (CDE), ensure our school principals - who directly manage our schools - have and use accurate information on enrollment, funding rates and funding regulations.
- Work with school leaders and School Operations Managers to ensure smooth and accurate annual authorizer oversight visits and independent annual audit, including Public School Choice school requirements as outlined by LAUSD.
- Monitor preparation of all schedules for the audit and ensure accounting records accurately prepared prior to the audit commencement.
- Coordinate audit with partners, ensuring their compliance and coordination with audit schedule, audit requirements and auditor's findings per California K-12 Audit Guide or bond covenants.
- Work with back office provider to coordinate proper filing of tax returns.
- Ensure compliance related to organizational vendor contracts, local, federal, and state reporting, facilities standards, Public School Choice requirements, RFP processes and safety protocols.
- Establish relationships with outside agencies to provide on-going support and gain new best practices that will serve CNCA students.
- Manage and attend all Board Meetings to ensure compliance with Brown Act requirements. This includes managing "Board On-Track" platform.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Multi-task, prioritize, and organize to consistently produce timely and accurate work of the highest quality.

Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree necessary; master degree or CPA preferred.
- At least seven (7) years of experience in a management role in finance/accounting, with preference for non-profit experience successfully leading finances for a budget of $40M or higher.
- Familiarity with nonprofit accounting and/or charter schools strongly preferred including audit experience with the California K-12 Audit Guide.
- Must have experience in Federal A133 audit and knowledge of procedures and internal controls of GAAP.
- Solid experience in general budget creation and oversight, with expertise in budgeting and forecasting.
- Proven ability to prioritize and complete multiple complex business projects across multiple sites simultaneously.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with a collaborative management style.
- Proven success as a leader as evidenced by multiple proof points.
- Experience with Board Governance and Brown Act Requirements.
- Experience building, managing and developing teams as well as working across teams.
