The Director/Sr. Director, Consumable Operations is part of the Pacific Biosciences Operations team and reports directly into the Vice President Manufacturing & Quality. The position will be site based at our facility in Menlo Park, CA.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice President of Manufacturing & Quality, the Sr. Director of Consumable Operations will lead all Consumable operational functions (for both Chip/SMRT Cells & Reagent Production) at our Menlo Park, CA site which is involved in the production and distribution of long read single molecule sequencing equipment and associated consumables. In this role, you will be responsible for driving a culture of continuous improvement in support of outstanding quality and on time deliveries to our customers. Specifically, you will provide direction and leadership to the following functions: Chip Manufacturing, Reagent Manufacturing, Consumable Manufacturing/Sustaining Engineering, Consumable Metrology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure successful execution of all key operational and quality deliverables for the combined consumable operation (Chips/SMRT Cells & Reagents) including build-plan and delivery targets, critical quality parameters, inventory objectives, various KPI's (including clear root cause countermeasures for missed metrics), and overall employee management and development.
- Support setting of strategic direction for all consumable operations at the site, in alignment with corporate goals and objectives.
- Establish a culture of collaboration and alignment between various functions and departments to ensure that all major site strategic manufacturing and quality objectives are met.
- Meet customer satisfaction objectives in the areas of order communications, on-time delivery, and installation as well as ongoing quality and reliability standards for consumables and in support of instruments.
- Responsible for identifying and implementing best practices policies, procedures and manufacturing strategies to drive continual improvement in production and performance metrics across the site.
- Lead their team to high levels of Operational Excellence, productivity, and inventory turnover through contemporary Lean Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management concepts.
- Ensure the team is a key participant and stakeholder in the support of New Product Development process, with the goal of on-time launch of high-quality products that meet cost, feature, and quality objectives.
- Key decision maker for all subjects in the areas of manufacturing and manufacturing/sustaining engineering.
- Meet combined factory revenue targets in excess of $200M annually.
- Manage a team of approximately 4 direct reports with a total of 30 employees.
- Ability to expand beyond current role/responsibility to include other areas of the overall manufacturing process
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or associated science degree; an MBA would be an asset.
- Must have a minimum of 12 years of progressive manufacturing operations management experience in a life science consumable business, semi-conductor manufacturing and/or complex reagents business including a solid track record of advancement and a variety of functional experiences (production, manufacturing/sustaining engineering, supply chain, Lean, etc.).
- Prior formal training and implementation experience in Six Sigma, lean manufacturing concepts would be preferred (5S, pull systems/Kanban, DFT, value stream mapping, kaizen).
- The ability to multi-task and to manage projects and key deliverables.
- Previous ERP experience is a must, with SAP experience highly desired.
- Will have worked in an organization with complex products along with high levels of process compliance and effectiveness.
- Excellent at tactical delivery and strategic thinking with solid written, verbal and presentation skills.
- High comfort level of interacting, discussing, and presenting to internal/external customers and senior leadership.
- Strong acumen in workforce planning, people development to build strong bench strength at all levels in the org.
