You will be relied upon to contribute to materials formulation, testing, and advanced analysis. The focus will be on improving sintered metal parts and their fundamental properties like density, conductivity, and mechanical strength as well as playing a role in polymeric binder formulation and testing.

Responsibilities

* Design and analyze experiments intended to isolate root causes of failure, improve product properties, and increase yield and throughput
* Collaborate with a team of diverse engineers to optimize our additive manufacturing process
* Debind and sinter 3D printed parts and understand how formulations and furnace conditions influence part performance
* Measure parts and analyze experimental results including conductivity, density, directional uniformity, and ash content
* Analyze impurities in metals and binders and understand how they influence performance
* Formulate feedstocks for 3D printing and experiment with particle shape and size distribution effects on 3D printing and sintering outcomes
* Conduct failure analysis and reliability improvement
* Develop material and process specifications
* Communicate results and plans
* Hands on lab work, including chemical, powder, and materials handling

Requirements

* PhD in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or MS plus the equivalent in experience and expertise relevant to additive manufacturing
* Strong analytical approach to troubleshooting materials processing, aging, and development
* Experience in metal imaging (microscopy and X-ray), elemental analysis, SEM, EDS
* Experience in polymer formulation, photopolymerization, and polymer characterization (including typical analytical laboratory equipment)
* Experience with developing new materials
* Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with changing needs
* Familiar with additive manufacturing
* Knowledge using mixers, coaters, and 3D printers
* Experience transferring a process from R&D to pilot scale
* Experience with metallurgy, metal imaging techniques, metal or ceramic sintering
* Experience applying statistical methods to materials and process development, advanced use of JMP or other similar software

Bonus points

* Familiar with additive manufacturing
* Knowledge using mixers, coaters, and 3D printers
* Experience transferring a process from R&D to pilot scale
