Amgens Process Development (PD) organization is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our Pivotal & Commercial Synthetics team at Thousand Oaks, CA.

The successful candidate will serve as a laboratory operations manager supporting Pivotal & Commercial Synthetics at Thousand Oaks and a contributing member of the rapidly growing High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) team. They will be responsible for overseeing laboratory operations and will support the synthetics pipeline by applying automation equipment to conduct HTE experiments.

Scientific/Technical Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with chemists and engineers to solve process chemistry challenges using high-throughput technology and automation.
  • Design, implement, and interpret high-throughput experiments for a variety of HTE workflows such as reaction optimization, extraction, solubility, and crystallization.
  • Actively contribute to drug substance development teams by providing project updates, data interpretation, and technical recommendations.
  • Operate and perform basic troubleshooting of laboratory automation tools and/or equipment.
  • Manage laboratory operations by serving as the point-person for Unity Lab Services, PerkinElmer, JLL Equipment Services, and other third-party contractor services.
  • Coordinate with Amgens laboratory asset management service (LAMP) on the preventative maintenance, calibration, and repair service of equipment and instruments.
  • Provide training to laboratory staff on equipment and software usage.
  • Ensure that all laboratory hoods are equipped with a standard set of equipment/instruments to conduct process development.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure the implementation of the principles of 5S throughout the laboratory.
  • Proactively survey the laboratory and equipment for potential safety concerns.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment information is updated in Amgens equipment management system.
  • Order chemicals as needed and ensure chemical inventories are updated in Amgens Chemical and Reagent Inventory System (CRIS).
  • Maintain good laboratory documentation practices and compliance with electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) guidelines.

Basic Qualifications

Masters degree and 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical development

Or

Bachelors degree and 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical development

Preferred Qualifications
  • Consistent track record of accomplishments in the field of organic synthesis and/or chemical process development (e.g., peer-reviewed publications and/or patents)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and ability to work well in teams
  • Demonstration of good lab practices, with particular attention to safety
  • Experience in analytical techniques such as NMR, HPLC, GC, and MS
  • Knowledge of basic office and chemistry software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ChemDraw, and SciFinder
