OPPORTUNITY
The Chief Growth Officer will join the team at KIPP Northern California during an exciting phase of growth and organizational development. This is a senior leadership role that will partner with the CEO in representing the organization externally, and will oversee our Marketing & Communications, Development, Advocacy and Community Engagement, Growth and Public Affairs departments.

This leader is responsible for ensuring that we are successful in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a growing and diverse philanthropic funding base in order to achieve our ambitious fundraising goals. They will also ensure that internal and external communications are strategic and impactful and that KIPP's brand is positioned positively among stakeholders. This leader also oversees organizational growth strategy, district and authorizer partnerships, and parent and community engagement. As such, they are responsible for the development and execution of a long-term advocacy agenda that enables our students, schools, and communities to thrive. They are charged with KIPP Northern California Public Schools' successful growth, including driving key district and community relationships, conveying to relevant stakeholders how the organization's vision fits into the larger political context, creating the conditions for ongoing collaboration and partnership in a community, elevating parent voices, pursuing policy change where necessary, and securing permanent, quality facilities.

The Chief Growth Officer will report to the CEO and work from our downtown Oakland offices, with frequent travel to our schools and local communities throughout the Bay Area and Stockton. The role is available immediately.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development: Drive the success of our ambitious multi-year fundraising campaign, in partnership with the CEO, Board of Directors and development team. Create the vision and strategy for diversifying our fundraising base and oversee high quality execution through the cultivation-ask-close stewardship cycle. Ensure best-in-class fund development operation that effectively integrates and leverages marketing and communications expertise to attract, engage, inspire and retain a breadth of individual and institutional donors. Assume ultimate responsibility for an effective fundraising strategy, participate in solicitations and manage a portfolio of major donors/funders. Success in this area ensures that the $95M campaign closes on time with new major donors participating This is year 3 of the current 6 year campaign and as of today $45M has been raised. The campaign ends June 30th, 2025.
  • Marketing & Communications: Develop vision for and oversee the development of a highly effective internal and external communications and social media strategy, including messaging and marketing materials differentiated by audience (e.g., prospective families, teachers, donors, staff, current funders and supporters, elected officials, etc.). Proactively develop and strengthen our brand across all stakeholder audiences. Direct crisis communications when necessary and engage in public relations. Ensure KIPP is represented accurately, with integrity and optimal impact across diverse audiences.
  • Family Engagement, Organizing, and Mobilization: Set advocacy strategy using community organizing as the key lever for change, creating true local support of organizational efforts. Collaborate with organizational partners to cultivate and develop parent support and leadership, deepen outreach and engagement with families, and cultivate organizing skills across all of our schools. Success in this area results in at least 8 parents regularly participating as members in each school's family leadership council and ensuring that 2 parent leader training cohorts are active each year with at least 20 parents per cohort.
  • Growth Planning and Political Strategy: Oversee growth strategy and ensure the successful sequencing and opening of new schools. Success in this area ensures that Stockton schools launch on-time and on-budget (students, talent, facilities, community partnerships, parent support etc. all in place). Will also ensure long-term stable facilities are in place for 3-4 priority schools in the Bay Area portfolio. Set advocacy strategies informed by local partners and local context. Understand political dynamics within each community to build a clear strategy for engaging key stakeholders and influencers towards successful organizational outcomes. Success in this area includes active leadership in statewide policy and advocacy efforts that result in legislation and funding that protects and promotes the interests of KIPP schools, students, families, and their local communities.
  • District and Authorizer Relationships: Build partnerships with key cabinet members, district staff, and elected officials in order to effectively navigate the charter petition, renewal, or revision processes. Define and integrate negotiation strategy into the larger organizational context. We currently work with 11 different authorizers, so this part of the role is both complex and expansive. Success in this area ensures successful charter renewals (resulting from solid district partnerships, positive brand positioning, excellent cross-team collaboration & project management, and strong parent & community advocacy).
  • Community Partnerships: Build strong partnerships with key community leaders and influencers (e.g., faith leaders, community-based organizations, other nonprofits and charter operators) to develop trust-based relationships and support for KIPP's mission and schools.
  • Team Management and Leadership: Serve as a member of the Executive Team, partnering closely with other members to ensure that organizational goals are aligned and supported by our political advocacy, community engagement and strategic communications. Effectively manage and develop direct reports with an assets-based approach, cultivating a collaborative and inclusive team culture that seeks to coach and empower direct reports; and where diverse backgrounds and perspectives are respected and valued. Bring a proven track record of navigating complex issues, managing multiple stakeholders, making decisions, and driving strong results.
  • Disrupt Racial Inequities: Demonstrate the courage and skill to respectfully interrupt conversations, behaviors and systems laden with unconscious, implicit or explicit bias. As a senior leader in the organization, actively champion our commitment to anti-racism through ongoing inquiry, implementation of systems and structures to advance equity, and contribute demonstrated results towards our vision for DEI while holding others accountable to doing the same.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Extensive track record of working collaboratively with external partners and Boards of Directors.
  • 15+ years experience managing staff with proven results, retaining top talent, developing people and yielding exceptional results through other leaders and managers.The ability to work across teams and with diverse leaders is essential.
  • Demonstrated results leading at least two of the following functions is required (experience leading more than two preferred): market growth, marketing, communications, business development, fund development, public affairs, and/or advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior leadership and/or board to lead strategic initiatives.
  • K-12 education experience preferred.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep passion for social justice and educational equity, extensive executive leadership and relationship-building skills, and strengths in cultural competence, strategic communication, stakeholder management, and team development. Successful candidates will be deeply committed to KIPP Northern California's imperative to disrupt racial inequities, and will bring the courage and skill to respectfully interrupt conversations and behaviors laden with unconscious, implicit, or explicit bias.

The individual will have a history of collaborating effectively both at the board and staff level to achieve ambitious outcomes. Additionally, successful candidates will bring experience closing significant negotiations and solicitations on behalf of an organization. They will be energized by building relationships and enlisting supporters to the mission of KIPP Northern California; be a motivational communicator who can masterfully tell the KIPP story by elevating the experiences of families, students, and staff; and be highly skilled at written and verbal communications and public relations.

Additionally, the individual will have experience successfully navigating complex political environments and a track record of managing advocacy cycles from strategy, to organizing to policy wins. Ideally, this person also will have experience in community organizing, coalition building and creating a culture of advocacy -- skills they will need to leverage to protect the operating conditions that enable our schools and students to thrive and to build the kind of relationships and partnerships that result in robust community schools.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $220,000. KIPP offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and transportation benefits.
