THE ROLE

In partnership with the Emerson People team and the XQ Managing Directors, the XQ Head of Human Resources will lead colleagues in creating an inspirational culture and an employee experience that empower the pursuit of XQs mission to lead the nation in rethinking high school. Based in Oakland, the HR manager will foster clarity and collaborative teamwork. Reporting to the General Manager, the HR manager has expertise in talent acquisition, talent development, ethics and compliance, and the operating rhythms of not-for-profit organizations. The HR manager will lead a team that implements top-drawer strategy and tactics for new colleague orientation, total rewards, learning and development, employee relations, and employee experience / engagement. The ideal candidate will be agile in serving as a leader and a doer for a small, visionary, impassioned organization.

Requirements

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE:

Orchestrating the Talent Lifecycle

This head of HR will oversee the talent lifecycle for the organization. This encompasses:

* Setting standards and processes for everything from scoping new positions to guiding recruitment, hiring, onboarding, management, development, and advancement of employees.
* Designing and owning the development, delivery, and effectiveness of the activities and self-measurements across all touchpoints of the employee journey, including on-boarding and off-boarding, HRIS/ATS process and optimization, talent mapping, career development, compliance, and internal mobility
* Working with managers and directors in the XQ organization, and in partnership with colleagues at the Emerson Collective, to ensure that XQs employment brand reflects the organizations unique scope, mission, and status within the not-for-profit landscape.
* Serving as an internal advisor to XQs managers, ensuring that employees are able to perform their work and conduct business relationships at levels of the quality and productivity befitting this organization.

IMPLEMENTING CULTURAL TOOLS & TOUCHPOINTS

The Head of HR will drive and coordinate the efforts to implement the XQ workplace culture as it has been articulated by XQs leaders and team (e.g., as in SYP outputs such as the XQ Mindsets). S/he will play a central role in designing, implementing, and monitoring the tools, processes, and touchpoints that enable team members to live up to the tenets of XQs operating culture, ensuring that the way we do things around here reflects the organizations mission, passion, and founding principles. This will include, but is not limited to:

* Developing policies, processes, and tools that reflect the XQ culture in terms of their emphasis on the quality of work and deliverables, continuous improvement, and collegiality/collaboration
* Partner with the general manager to analyze and optimize the organizational structure, roles, process, and compensation for XQ. Where necessary, facilitate necessary change management in support of these optimizations
* Partnering with team members to develop equity, inclusion, and belonging activities that foster a welcoming and engaging environment where all team members can show up authentically and be inspired to perform at their best
* Implementing the structures and activities that will create a positive, enjoyable, and rewarding workplace for all employees
* Implementing programs, policies, and practices designed to enhance employee engagement, reduce turnover, empower diversity and inclusion, and ensure legal compliance
* Providing training and coaching for leaders and managers on topics related to employee relations, appropriate workplace behavior, and performance management
* Ensuring that all HR documents, policies, actions, and processes, etc. drive individual and organizational compliance with state and federal regulations and statutes
* Interface with partners and Emerson around all XQ-specific elements of larger human resources processes (e.g., benefits, compensation, employment law)

SETTING THE TONE WITH OFFICE LEADERSHIP

As a leader based in the Oakland office, the head of HR will set expectations and ensure appropriate norms and practices across XQs workforce. This responsibility includes establishing parameters for respectful and productive collaborations between XQs employees and network of partners. The head of HR will also support managers in holding their teams accountable for living up to XQs cultural ideals. The head of HR will also offer development and performance management guidance and feedback to managers in one-on-one and group settings

LEADERSHIP OF A HUMAN RESOURCES TEAM

The head of HR will lead a team of professionalseither internal to XQ or as partnerswho are charged with carrying out the more tactical aspects of this roles mission in an effective and collegial fashion. S/he will plan and deliver to budget, in alignment with XQ annual budgets and business plans. As needed, the head of HR will identify and contract with business partners whose work aligns with XQ culture and values. At all times, s/he will implement and maintain a safe work environment.
