The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies. Comprising of scientists across multiple disciplines, we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first in human studies.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) team in the Translational Research Group at Bristol Myers Squibb (Redwood City, CA). The Scientist will be part of a team dedicated to developing various tissue-based assays to drive discovery programs and enable translational biomarker strategies in multiple oncology programs. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth histopathology laboratory skills and experience, including tissue grossing, processing and embedding, automated IHC staining, IHC validation research using IHC markers for bright field and multiplexed immunofluorescence (IF) assays. He/she will also have effective communication skills in English, ability to work in a matrixed-based, fast paced environment, solid problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.
Duties & Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform assigned histology and IHC staining work independently by organizing own workload and following study protocols, including rodent tissue grossing, operating automated tissue processors, performing paraffin embedding of tissue and cell pellet blocks, performing IHC, in situ hybridization and multiplexed IF staining using autostainers and scanning stained slides; produce high quality histological/IHC slides and complete all study activities on time
Perform all work efficiently in a safe manner and in compliance with applicable regulations
Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor adjustments on lab equipment; demonstrate ability to trouble-shoot equipment without supervision
Document all work activities and maintain all assigned study records in accordance with study protocols by following company policies, using current forms and procedures, making all entries legibly, accurately and contemporaneously in a timely fashion
Provide training and technical support to team members when needed
May perform digital quantification of IHC staining for in vivo studies
Retrieve and store specimens properly for long term storage; organize and maintain archived histological slides and blocks
Order laboratory supplies to maintain proper inventory
Effectively collaborate in highly matrixed organization as a team player
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in Biological Sciences or related Biomedical fields with over 8 years of experience or Masters degree with over 5 years experience in histotechnology in an industry or academic/clinic core lab
Extensive hands-on histopathology laboratory experience, including mouse tissue grossing, operating automated tissue processors, performing paraffin embedding, performing IHC and in situ hybridization using autostainers (Leica Bond, Ventana, DAKO, etc.), and operating whole-slide scanners (Leica AT2, etc.)
Extensive experience in FFPE microtome and frozen tissue cryostat sectioning
American Society of Clinical Pathology certified Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) is required
Experience in IHC antibody validation and IHC assay development is highly desirable
Experience with digital pathology and image analysis software (HALO, etc.)
Experience with Microsoft Office software suit (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
Effective written and verbal communication skills in English
Familiarity with a matrixed based, fast-paced work environment
Collaborative/team spirit and ability to thrive in a matrixed environment
Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills and technologies
Be able to work in a seated position for an extended duration (~2h), with periodic breaks, while performing routine histotechnology functions (eg., tissue trimming, embedding, microtomy, etc)
Some knowledge of cancer biology is a plus
