The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies. Comprising of scientists across multiple disciplines we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first in human studies.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) team in the Translational Research Group at Bristol Myers Squibb (Redwood City, CA). The Scientist will be part of a team dedicated to developing various tissue-based assays to drive discovery programs and enable translational biomarker strategies in multiple oncology programs. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth experience in IHC antibody screening, validation, IHC assay development and validation including chromogenic and multiplexed immunofluorescence assays, experience in digital pathology/image analysis and exploring new tissue-based technology such as spatial transcriptomics. He/she will also have excellent verbal and written communication skills; is capable of presenting scientific results to multidisciplinary teams; has the ability to work flexibly in a matrixed, fast paced environment as a team player, with solid problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.

The candidate will work closely with various discovery and biomarker teams to contribute to translational research and biomarker packages to support advancement of therapeutic candidates. The candidate will act as an expert resource in Immunohistochemisty and collaborate across a highly matrixed organizational structure.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead IHC biomarker projects to meet project requirements in a timely manner
  • Design, develop, and execute translational IHC and tissue-based biomarker assays to support biomarker strategies for patient selection/stratification, pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, etc,
  • Develop and implement single and multiplexed IHC assays by both chromogenic and fluorescent detection methods from antibody selection and validation through establishment of standard staining protocols
  • Interface with biology discovery and biomarker leads to build translational IHC research package
  • Perform and manage in-house, collaborative or CRO-based research to support multiple projects
  • Generate, analyze, summarize, report and present IHC data in relevant meetings
  • Oversee data analyses and delivery data of CRO-based projects
  • Actively participate in internal and external scientific meetings
  • Identify, evaluate and apply new tissue-based technologies to support evolving biomarker strategies
  • Effectively collaborate in highly matrixed organization to drive advancement of early stage projects into translational and early clinical development
  • Act as an expert in Immunohistochemistry and train team members in established methodologies, troubleshoot, and provide guidance to internal collaborators
  • Work flexibly in a fast-paced industrial research environment as a team player
  • Excellent communication skills in written and verbal English
  • Supervise one scientist
Requirements:
  • PhD degree in Biological Sciences or related Biomedical fields with over 3 years of relevant experience in oncology/immuno-oncology or postdoc experience of 4-6 years in industry or academic setting
  • In-depth knowledge of cancer biology or immunology; demonstrated capability and productivity in research or development
  • Strong experience in IHC antibody validation, IHC assay development, in situ hybridization/RNAscope and multiplexed immunofluorescent staining in tissues are required
  • Experience and knowledge in digital pathology and image analysis (Halo software, etc,) are highly desirable
  • Knowledge of histology and tumor pathology is a big plus
  • Experience as a project leader or a team leader is desirable
  • Experience working with service providers and CROs is a plus
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in written and verbal English, familiarity with a fast-paced work environment
  • Collaborative/team spirit and ability to thrive in a matrixed environment
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills and technologies
