Hourly Rates*:

* Lifeguard: $13-$14.33
* Lifeguard/WSI: $14.33-$15.80
* During the Summer months (May-September) Aquatics employees may receive a 20% increase in base pay as a seasonal incentive.

The Lifeguard and Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructors (WSI) positions vary in number of hours worked per week. Work schedule may include weekends and holidays. Essential Duties and Responsiblities

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

Under general supervision, accomplishes specialized work in protecting life, preventing accidents, enforcing safety regulations, providing instructions, and assisting in the operation of the public swimming pool. Supervises swimming activities in and around pools to insure that policies, rules, and regulations are observed and enforced, and that no safety hazards are created; warns swimmers of improper activities or danger of drowning; administers first aid in the event of injury; administers artificial respiration if required; assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment;and performs other related work as required. Lifeguard/WSI also instructs classes in various levels of swimming.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Lifeguard:

* Must be at least 16 years of age.
* Must possess or be in the process of obtaining American Red Cross First Aid certificate/CPR/AED & First Aid for public Safety personnel (Title 22). A Person may be in the process of obtaining Lifeguard/CPR/AED & First Aid for Public Safety personnel (Tittle 22) certificate at the time of employment.
* Some experience in lifesaving, swim instruction or advanced swimming is preferred.

Lifeguard WSI:

* Must be at least 16 years of age.
* Must possess or be in the process of obtaining American Red Cross First Aid certificate/CPR/AED & First Aid for public Safety personnel (Title 22). A Person may be in the process of obtaining Lifeguard/CPR/AED & First Aid for Public Safety personnel (Tittle 22) certificate at the time of employment.
* Some experience in lifesaving, swim instruction or advanced swimming is preferred.
* Must possess a current Water Safety Instructor Certificate (a person may be in the process of obtaining Water Safety Instructor certificate at time of employment)

General knowledge of equipment operations relating to swimming pools; knowledge of the means of lifesaving and of artificial respiration, knowledge of first aid and its application.

Ability to direct the activities and work of others; meet and deal tactfully with the public; and demonstrate swimming proficiency. Lifeguard/WSI will also provide detailed lesson plans on a daily basis. Supplemental Information

Selection Process:

Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application materials that they meet the employment standards outlined above. All properly completed applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists. The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which may include a physical, drug screen, and fingerprinting.

Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility

Veterans of the armed forces, who have received Honorable Discharges from active duty, shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment. A copy of your valid DD214 must be submitted on or before the final filing date in order to be eligible for Veterans Preference Credit.
