Leidos is currently seeking a full-time Research Epidemiologist to support the Deployment Health Research Program at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. This position will provide research and analytic expertise for large, military-focused health research studies with a focus on chronic disease, cancer epidemiology, and environmental and occupational exposures. The successful candidate will also be involved the planning and implementation of epidemiologic analyses in a large longitudinal cohort; developing approaches for exposure assessment to occupational and environmental hazards from multiple data sources such as enterprise databases and biological specimens. Specific tasks include designing study methodology; performing statistical analyses for research projects focused on chronic diseases with complex study designs; working with team members to derive an in-depth understanding of the data findings drafting proposals and writing peer-reviewed publications. The Research Epidemiologist will work closely with the studies' leadership and stakeholders, including Principal Investigators, military personnel, subject matter experts, consultants, analysts, and research support personnel.

Due the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are highly encouraged to work remotely from their home office, although occasional visits to the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego will be required. Longer term, this position will be required to be on-site at the Naval Health Research Center a minimum of 2 days a week.

Primary Responsibilities:

Participates in all aspects of the research process including survey design, data collection and management, and data analysis and interpretation.

Provides research and analytic support for study design, implementation, and analyses of deployment health research projects, with a focus on chronic disease, environmental, and/or occupational epidemiology.

Develops protocols and proposals including conducting literature reviews and writing of the scientific background, study methodology, and data analyses. Additionally, writes the interpretation of data findings in the context of ongoing research objectives and publishes findings.

Develop methods for assessment of exposures to occupational and environmental hazards from multiple data sources such as enterprise databases and biological specimens.

Apply methods for case ascertainment for cancers and other chronic diseases from surveys, medical records, and disease registries.

Provides study team with individual and group-level teaching and mentorship, and helps review the analyses and writing of other team members for scientific rigor and accuracy.

Develops algorithms and writes programs to clean, merge, and update variables/datasets from large epidemiologic studies. Runs programs to create final datasets for this large study program ensuring accuracy.

Performs and helps interpret statistical analyses using SAS and MPlus, including data manipulations, weighting techniques, logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.

Designs and manages numerous research projects simultaneously. Works as a member of a team to conduct scientific research projects focused on chronic disease outcomes and leads cross-functional project teams.

Writes reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed professional journals.

Delivers presentations to the Department and at various national and international scientific and military conferences.

Provides knowledge and insight to principal investigator for new study ideas and long-term goals and objectives.

Provides scientific and statistical consulting services and direction for the Department.

Reviews and remains current with technical and scientific literature and study outcomes of interest.

Basic Qualifications

Master's degree in psychology, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or related field and a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible research experience OR a doctoral level degree in Public Health, Psychology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a related field and a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible research experience.

Authorship on 10 or more peer-reviewed publications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge in survey methodology and statistics used to collect an interpret data.

Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing statistical experiments.

Knowledge and proficiency of statistical and/or mathematical software, such as SAS and MPlus.

Skilled in developing and writing grant proposals.

Familiarity working with medical record data strongly preferred.

Due to federal contract restrictions, candidate must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
