The CFO will provide overall direction and leadership to Gladstone's financial management functions, which include Finance, Grants and Contracts, Budget and Accounting, Revenue Analysis, Risk Management, Purchasing, Asset Management, and Financial Analysis/Strategy. The CFO will be a trusted and valued professional partner to the COO, President, and Trustees, and will be a key member of the executive management team. The CFO will serve as an exemplary model of outstanding executive behaviors relating to leadership, integrity, creativity, and interpersonal relationships. The CFO will ensure that the financial dimensions of Gladstone's strategic plans and operational activities are effectively implemented, and that results are monitored, objectives are attained, fiduciary responsibilities are upheld, and appropriately communicated. The CFO will develop a talented and harmonious team of supporting personnel, including potential succession candidates. This position reports to the COO and has direct access to the President and Trustees as required.


In concert with key direct reports, duties include:

  • Serve as key advisor to COO, President and Executive Management team on financial and administrative matters and in the development and achievement of institutional goals, objectives, and strategy.

  • Responsible for the effective management of staff and budgets for activities assigned.

  • Responsible for Institutes-wide planning and management of financial resources

  • Responsible for all aspects of grants and contracts pre-and post- award administration and portfolio analysis and forecast.

  • Strategically guide the development and management of Gladstone's operating and capital budgets, forecast, and its long-range plan.

  • Financial analysis and asset management functions.

  • Responsible for an efficient and effective financial management and reporting system which properly accounts for revenues and expenditures of the organization and provides for financial reports and information needed for management decision purposes.

  • Responsible for oversight of financial activities associated with grants and contracts, business development relationships and ventures (corporate and academic), and fundraising initiatives.

  • Understands key elements of Gladstone's risk profile, and recommends to the COO reasonable risk management strategies including but not limited to constructing and monitoring reliable systems of control focused on ensuring protection of assets and risk mitigation, financial compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, and maintaining appropriate insurance coverages for the organization.

  • Provide leadership in the planning, formulation, and implementation of Gladstone-wide policies and procedures consistent with relevant business and financial guidelines, and applicable governmental regulatory requirements, guidelines, and better practices.

  • Assure compliance with governmental regulations, and industry standards. Responsible for the effective coordination and conduct of all Institute audits: internal and external, financial, operational and program.

  • Serves as key partner in the process overseeing and the effective management of outside professional activities, conflicts of interest and commitment.

  • Develop and implement structures that promote strong, effective relationships within the Institutes' finance functions and between the Institutes' scientific, administrative, and financial functions.

  • May perform other duties as assigned by COO, President, and Trustees. Duties may be modified from time-to-time at Gladstone's discretion.

  • Serve as Treasurer of the Gladstone Foundation or oversight of anyone delegated this responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Business Management, or Finance; certification as CPA or equivalent preferred.

  • Fifteen plus years of progressive management experience in finance and financial management roles and grants administration and management; biomedical, academic or non-profit environment a plus.

  • Proven analytical skills, knowledge of scientific research environments, and the ability to drive success in complex initiatives within a fast-paced environment are a must. The incumbent must thrive in a collaborative environment and possess the ability to foster strong internal and external relationships.
