The position is responsible for leading the overall direction of the West Region Education, Science & Advanced Technologies ("ESAT") sector in support of four offices: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. This position will report directly to the Global Director, ESAT and will be responsible for overall practice leadership for the ESAT market sector at the regional and local levels. This position will be responsible for assuring that HDR's ESAT brand is elevated and maintained from market visibility and business development strategies, through quality design, innovative planning, client service and thought leadership on projects throughout the West Region. Project types include research and development facilities for academic, institutional, government, and corporate sector clients. Projects may include a variety of teaching, research, imaging, metrology, testing, and pre-production facilities in the areas of life sciences, physical sciences, biocontainment, animal research, public health, critical facilities / data centers, and related support facilities such as administrative offices, central utility plants, etc. Project opportunities are largely within the West Region, but may extend beyond due to personal relationships, particular expertise, etc.
Business Development
• Lead overall annual sector planning by establishing annual fee goals, marketing budgets, initiatives, and expected planning outcomes locally and regionally.
Lead overall sector business development to identify priorities, strategies and associated target clients locally, regionally, and nationally.
• Work closely in collaboration with Managing Principals, ESAT Principals, Design Principals and ESAT Sector Teams to formulate and implement marketing initiatives.
• Develop and nurture strong relationships with key clients which may include individual facilities, systems and institutions throughout the region and with local offices.
• Establish ESAT sector business development priorities and strategies in collaboration with ESAT Strategic Sector Manager for research, market trend analysis, competitor analysis, assessment and application of predictive analytics, network building, etc.
• Participate / support reviews for Go / No Go, Fee, and Risk Committee related to traditional and alternative delivery projects.
• Assist and coach pursuit teams in developing effective client capture plans, pre-marketing strategies and relationship building with target clients. Assist, guide and coach pursuit teams in proposal and interview preparation, whenever appropriate.
• Identify and develop strategic partnerships within or outside the ESAT industry to support and achieve our strategic business initiatives.
Practice Leadership
• Lead the ongoing evaluation and assessment of our ESAT practice at the local office and regional levels to identify current and desired capabilities, including gap analysis of practice performance.
• Establish appropriate practice growth strategies, in collaboration with others, to address any gaps across our local and regional practice teams.
• Mentor, advise and nurture the ESAT leaders, current and future, within each office in the region and assist, where appropriate, with the development of each office core team.
• Assist in identifying, evaluating and recruiting new talent for our ESAT practice, from either outside or within HDR.
• Mentor and coach existing employees in our current service delivery approach to increase performance and effectiveness of our overall practice.
• Assist and support the onboarding efforts for new ESAT staff.
• Assist in providing accurate and current content for standardized reports (dashboards) to include bookings vs. goals, pursuit volume, costs vs. budgets, hit rate, top pursuits, planned vs. actual marketing pursuit expenses, etc.
• When and where appropriate, actively participate on projects in an appropriate capacity to advise client, and otherwise add value to our service, the project and the team.
• When and where appropriate, provide insights and guidance to our teams on our work on ESAT projects.
Brand Management
• Assist with strategy for annual market sector Communications planning, to elevate HDR's brand and thought leadership throughout the ESAT industry.
• Assist with strategy and content for external marketing communications; including special initiatives, special events, conference speaking abstracts, media relationships, social media, design awards and website.
• Assist with strategy and content for internal marketing communications; including annual kickoff, regional BD calls/meetings and knowledge sharing.
Market Sector Infrastructure
• Monthly Reports - Work directly with Strategic Sector Manager to provide regular reports for regional and local pursuit activity and progress.
• Client Distribution Lists - Create and maintain regional and local client distribution lists and process for keeping this list accurate and current.
• Assist with content for special / specific presentations such as road shows, cross-sector shows, acquisition presentations, and corporate events.

Qualifications
Qualifications
- Professional credentialing in architecture, engineering, interior design or related field.
- Applicable state registration.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in A/E/C industry.
- Knowledge and experience within the local and regional ESAT market.
- Experience with successfully developing and executing targeted market and client strategies.
- Capable of leading a team and making client presentations.
- Proven business development experience in ESAT design industry.
- Forward-thinking and have a big-picture mentality.
- Strong leadership and project management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Committed to promoting design excellence.
- Willing to travel.
- Advanced credentials desired.
