Job description



PART-TIME Field Equipment Technician for San Jose, CA. 20 hours per week. Open on days/hours between 7AM and 6PM on-site.


Former Military/communications field experience or individuals who have EMS experience would be a plus. Training will be provided. Long-term 20 hours per week. Required to be on-site.


This is a highly skilled team dedicated to deploy personnel and equipment in the acute phase of a crisis in which normal communications infrastructure has been degraded, destroyed or perhaps never existed to begin with. Trained to work in challenging environments, the team responds with a variety of satellite-based communications equipment to provide secure IP-based voice, video, and data services to support response agencies and the public.


This team works in partnership with employees, first responders, government agencies and nonprofit partners to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from crisis through critical connectivity, collaboration and security solutions. In concert with our larger Crisis Response organization, we provide services pro-bono to served agencies, as well as cash/product grants to select non-profits.



Key focus areas are:



  • Immediate Response: A range of deployment models for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts

  • Technology Solutions: Testing, integrating, deploying, maintaining, and showcasing a portfolio of technology solutions that support emergency response activities for our partners.

  • Capacity Building: solution consulting, product advice, and training to build resilience and response capabilities of communities (partners, employees, customers and municipalities)

  • Strategic Partnerships: Partnerships, grants and joint deployments with select response agencies


The field equipment technician assists the team with delivering technologies, solutions, and services to support customers in times of need. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Asset / Inventory Management: Diligent tracking of equipment sent out and returned from emergency deployments, as well as spare equipment in storage, new equipment ordered, tools and supplies.

  • Equipment Checks and Maintenance: Basic operational checks of kits, vehicles and other assets. Includes basic troubleshooting steps and documentation of issues for remediation. More advanced repairs as skills evolve.

  • Technical Equipment Installation: Basic physical installation of IT, Land Mobile Radio and/or AV equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, IP phones, cameras, monitors, radios, etc.) in rack mount and other configurations; Layer 1 network and coax cable installation / termination / verification.

  • Mobile Asset Maintenance and Repairs: Basic operational checks (oil, fluids, tires) on vehicles and trailers. Performing or facilitating mechanical maintenance and repairs for a small fleet of specialized vehicles and trailers. Inspections and registration on vehicles. Interfacing with vendors and state government agencies (e.g. repair shops and DMV). Driving Cisco-owned vehicles and towing trailers (No CDL required, Class C license OK)

  • Logistics: shipping & receiving equipment, packaging / un-packaging being shipped, ordering equipment and consumable supplies, organizing and cleaning of equipment. Ability to lift 50-75 lbs.

  • Continuous Improvement: Working with the team to improve processes, drive efficiency, increase solution robustness/reliability while balancing with available resources.

  • Training: Assisting with training sessions and exercises for employees, public sector / NGO partners (moving / preparing equipment and supplies, other support activities), assisting with development and initial testing of training products.

  • Content, Documentation and databases creation / updates: Updating tools for asset management, customer relationship management, internal communication tools (SharePoint), file sharing (Box), Smartsheet, etc.

  • Disaster Relief Support: Remote back-end support for domestic and international disaster response missions, focusing on temporary communication solutions. No field deployments required/expected.

  • Potential after-hours work: For emergency response: ensuring equipment readiness for shipping / deployment on evenings and weekends.


The ideal candidate is a team-oriented, creative problem solver with a good working knowledge of basic logistics and hands-on equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities such as lifting heavy equipment (50-75 lbs), and willingness get your hands dirty operating and maintaining vehicles, equipment and tools.

  • Ability, comfort and willingness to safely drive large vehicles / trailers under 26000 lbs. CDL not required. Training to be provided. You must hold a valid driver's license and submit to a Department / Division of Motor Vehicles driving record check.

  • Good working knowledge Microsoft Office and other publication / collaboration tools e.g. Smartsheet, wikis, file-sharing.


The following are not required, but highly desired:



  • Military, public safety, humanitarian. Other field equipment installation or repair experience helpful.

  • Networking certifications (e.g. CCT R&S, CCNA) or equivalent experience. CCT or higher certification strongly recommended within 1 year of hire.

  • Other IT-related certifications (CompTIA Fundamentals / A+) or equivalent experience.

  • Linux installation / system administration experience

  • Land mobile / amateur radio installation and/or programming experience

  • Satellite equipment experience
