About the role:

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will use your technical expertise in designing and manufacturing complex mechanical systems to scale the development of our novel, tissue-engineered product. As a member of our growing Tissue and Bioreactor Engineering Team, you will report to the Associate Director of Tissue Engineering and work closely with tissue engineers, automation specialists, and manufacturing associates.

Responsibilities:

As part of the Tissue Bioreactor Engineering Team, you will work with the team to:

  • Design large-scale, tissue bioreactor systems to grow sheets of tissue
  • Use in-house equipment to create functional prototypes
  • Work with contract manufacturers to produce custom equipment
  • Test, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with bioreactor equipment
  • Select and source raw materials, individual components, and off-the shelf systems
  • Experimentally validate novel tissue bioreactor systems compared to existing technology
  • Translate tissue bioreactor technology to the Pilot Manufacturing team through in-depth documentation and hands-on trainings
  • Prepare process documentation for developed equipment
  • Interface between a variety of contributors and partners

Qualifications & Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of the engineering design process including: specification production; design generation, development and selection; failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA); materials and manufacturing process selection
  • Experience using CAD software to design parts and assemblies and to create specification drawings for manufacturing
  • Experience with hands-on creation of rapid prototypes and functional prototypes (3D printing and traditional machining methods) and evaluating designs through testing and rigorous analysis
  • Knowledge of design for assembly, manufacturing, automation, and sterilization processes
  • Desire to mentor other engineers and technicians on equipment use and other engineering skills
