The Manager, Laboratory Operations will oversee the strategic expansion into a new state of the art facility in the South San Francisco tech area. You will provide laboratory management support for the successful transition into, start up, daily operation, and possible continued expansion of this site.
You will have primary responsibility for the overall daily management and operation of the new scientific laboratory space (Targeted Therapeutics, Gene Therapy) within Janssen's Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) Scientific Systems & Laboratory Operations group. The Manager will be encouraged to coordinate with scientific leaders for their laboratory and automation needs, have oversite of the lab space, manage equipment operation and maintenance, assist with lab startup, coordinate equipment installation and moves, coordinate with facilities to correct facility issues while minimizing lab impact and coordinating day to day needs to enable scientific success.
The Manager, Laboratory Operations will lead and make key decisions in a dynamic environment. Your knowledge and experience will come in handy while influencing and collaborating with key partners while teaming up to make site preparations for the integration of new capital equipment and provide support for the planning of new lab design/construction. Responsibilities include oversight and scheduling of equipment maintenance and repairs, coordinating supplier/vendor relationships and partnering with scientists for the planning and integration of new technology and automation. This individual is the primary operations person to manage the lab space from a strategic operation, issue response and remediation perspective. This role will also be the primary collaborator with internal Safety, Business Operations, Facility Operations and Security functions.
Core responsibilities:
* Oversee/Manage the day-to-day DPDS South San Francisco laboratory space, including instrumentation and facility upkeep within the lab space to ensure efficient operational maintenance.
* Ensure routine and unscheduled maintenance of equipment is performed within acceptable timeframes by collaborating with external partners/organizations.
* Act as the primary point of contact to coordinate with external vendors and project teams to maintain contracts for necessary supplies, equipment and service.
* Ensure general laboratory safety standards are met, including coordination with site Safety, which could include conducting of safety inspections and associated corrective actions for adherence, as necessary.
* Manage cold storage, maintain department refrigerators/freezers and ensure appropriate stocking of lab supplies within ready access for lab personnel.
* Collaborate with IT to manage and maintain computer and automation systems, including upgrades and issue resolution.
* Collaborate w/ scientific staff and leaders to ensure a steady and ongoing relationship with intent for efficient operation, improved automation, and process improvement of workflows.
Additional responsibilities:
* Participate in and adhere to yearly business and budget planning for the department.
* Maintain laboratory compliance to established guidance.
* Lead or participate in process improvement teams.
* Conduct department training as necessary.
* Maintain appropriate lines of communication as 24/7 primary contact for emergency response.
* Review, author, and update department policy/procedures as required.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in a related science with at least 7 years of relevant experience or a Master's degree with 5 years of equivalent training or experience is required.
* Solid working knowledge of Laboratory operation, computers, instrumentation, automation, safety, and compliance is required
* Biological, pharmaceutical, or related laboratory experience is required.
* Prior laboratory experience on the bench or laboratory/operational management experience is required
* Prior people management experience is preferred
* Experience or understanding of concepts in biological laboratory operations, preferably with tissue culture and/or bacterial work is preferred
* Ability to lead and collaborate in a complex environment and prioritize with competing priorities is required
* Strong leadership background and able to communicate clearly and effectively is strongly preferred
* Strategic and critical thinking and ability to execute on those strategies is strongly preferred
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Effective organization, communication, and customer service is required
