VICE PRESIDENT, CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Chief Business and Strategy Officer, the Vice President, Corporate Development will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and recommending external programs, assets, and companies for potential partnership and/or acquisition by GBT. This role will work with, and lead teams comprised of multiple functions, including research, development, manufacturing, commercial, legal and finance to assess and conduct due diligence of external opportunities. This role will help shape corporate strategy, have high visibility across the organization, and will have substantial interactions with the GBT senior management team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategy: Work collaboratively with GBT senior management and leaders in Research, Development, and Commercial to set and update corporate strategy and business development goals to support the Company's strategy. Lead corporate valuation reviews and participate in portfolio prioritization reviews
  • In-licensing and acquisitions: Determine the screening criteria for external opportunities and regularly conduct screening and prioritization of external programs, assets and companies
  • For prioritized programs, analyze and perform scientific, clinical, regulatory, and commercial assessments of external programs, assets, and companies by collaborating with internal and external functional experts
  • Coordinate and perform due diligence assessments; drive cross-functional teams to an assessment of assets
  • Out-licensing/commercialization partnerships: Lead and/or support out-licensing and other partnership efforts, as appropriate. Support commercial partnership assessment and lead negotiations of commercial collaborations
  • Negotiations: Lead negotiations of term sheets and drive closure of contracts
  • Team: Build and mentor a productive and engaged corporate development team
  • Visibility: Summarize and recommend opportunities to GBT senior management team, and present to Board
  • Alliance Management: Coordinate and oversee alliance management of existing partnerships
  • Strategic Valuation: Lead and/or support annual corporate forecasting process
  • Networking: Proactively contact and regularly network with prospective partner companies, academic institutions; maintain collegial, ongoing relationships
  • Build relationships with KOLs with expertise in disease areas of interest
  • Regularly meet with venture capital groups, investment banks, and other sources of deal flow
  • Learning: Continuously update knowledge of industry pipeline in disease areas of interest to GBT
  • Travel to medical meetings, conferences, prospective companies on a regular basis

Qualifications:

Of utmost importance, the ideal candidate will possess proven corporate and business development experience with innovative, commercial stage biopharmaceutical companies that are focused on both broadening their R&D pipelines through in-licensing/acquisition initiatives and closing distribution deals for commercial products. This individual will have worked closely with an R&D organization to define, prioritize, and expand a company's pipeline programs; and therefore, it is likely the candidate will possess an MD and/or PhD with deep clinical and/or scientific experience in at least one specialty disease area, preferably in orphan diseases. The candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience in building and leading corporate/business development teams.

Additional qualifications include:

  • M.D. and/or Ph.D. or other advanced degree strongly preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in biopharmaceutical drug in-licensing, out-licensing and M&A transactional experience, as well as search and evaluation experience
  • Skilled and experienced in evaluating and synthesizing the key scientific, technical, and regulatory risks and opportunities for preclinical and clinical stage programs. Skilled and experienced in commercial-stage and international opportunities
  • Strong understanding of and experience with the clinical and regulatory aspects of specific specialty and/or orphan disease areas; disease expertise in specialty hematology or rare diseases would be appealing but is not a requirement
  • Judgment on clinical/regulatory risks and opportunities developed through experience and pattern recognition
  • Analytical as well as a creative thinker
  • Capacity to dive into details as well as step back and think strategically
  • Sophisticated oral and written communication skills; the successful candidate is comfortable conversing with KOLs, Board members, and working across the organization with multiple functions
  • Experienced in building, mentoring, and leading high performing teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to collaborate, lead, and influence across the organization
  • Thrives in entrepreneurial and high growth environment
  • Current and active observer of the industry; transactions being completed and new trends in deals
