Job description
Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Product Design Engineer intern to support development of future hardware accessory products. The Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) hardware accessory team designs and produces products which support all aspects of core hardware device products. This role will focus on collaborating with Accessories Engineering team members as well as cross functional partners to ideate on device designs, develop prototypes and validate prototype designs with respect to specifications. The role will also involve working with Joint Development Manufacturing Suppliers (JDM) to transition prototypes to mass production ready products.
Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long, and we have various start dates throughout the year.
- Collaborate with Product and Industrial Designers on development of new electro-mechanical products
- Work with rapid prototype supplier/partners to iterate on design concepts for new products
- Create 3D and supporting 2D documentation for new product development
- Create and execute Design of Experiments to support new product development
- Collaborate with Tooling Engineers and Suppliers in the design, manufacturing and qualification of design tooling
- Collaborate with our cross functional team in the selection of materials to meet performance, dimensional and cosmetic requirements for new products
- Currently have, or is in the process of obtaining, a Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Product Design, or related field
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
- Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, glass, etc.
- Experience with 3D CAD design software (Solidworks, NX, Creo/ProE)
- Understanding of the fundamentals of Consumer Electronics product design
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
- Troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
- Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship.
- Experience with design simulation tools (stress/strain FEA, thermal)
- Experience with design and development of handheld and/or wearable electronics for high volume manufacturing
