Job description
Come join a rapidly growing team as an optical engineer to make a significant impact on the future of AR/VR display technologies. As part of the Display and Optics organization at Reality Labs, you will be responsible for both research and development of future optical systems, and will have the opportunity to be part of a team composed of some of the best engineers, scientists and leaders defining the field of AR/VR. For this role, the emphasis will be on coming up with innovative concepts and advanced modeling techniques to design such systems, as well as working with vendors for prototyping, and performing lab characterization to drive the development efforts towards productization and influencing our ambitious AR/VR product roadmap.
- Conceptualize, design and develop new concepts and technologies for future Near-Eye Displays (NEDs), projectors, cameras and sensors. These technologies include integrated optics, polarization optics, optical system design, and novel lens design forms.
- Modeling and prototyping of core technologies to drive system performance and to validate achievable visual experience.
- Through rigorous tolerance analysis, assessing manufacturing capabilities and understanding customer-facing requirements, determine hardware specifications to assess overall performance of novel optical architectures.
- Research and development of emerging concepts in imaging systems and optical sensors in support of NEDs.
- Support prototyping activities with internal teams and external vendors to show path to feasibility and influence AR/VR roadmaps.
- Support evaluation and characterization of optical components, and system integration.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Optics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering (photonics/optics focus) or related field
- Proven fundamentals in geometrical and physical optics on one or more of the following areas: imaging optics, lens design, physical optics, illumination, radiometry and photometry, or stray light analysis
- Proven competence in sequential and non-sequential optical design tools and methods using Zemax, CodeV, LightTools, or similar
- Experience working in a lab setting, building bench-top optical setups, and performing optical characterization and measurements
- Experience using basic scripting languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
- Familiarity with precision fabrication methods such as diamond turning, plastic or glass optical element fabrication
- Basic understanding of display technologies such as OLED, LCD, LCOS or laser displays
- Experience with stray light modeling using FRED
- Experience developing prototypes and collaborating in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Optics
