CLIENT
Our client's family office is headquartered in the Western United States and is a well-established single-family office that has been running effectively for more than fifteen years. The family's wealth was the result of two highly successful businesses, and significant investment holdings.
OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Tax (Director) position is a newly created role and will support the family (3 Generations) to oversee a diverse set of interesting and complex business and personal family interests in which the family is highly engaged.
Working collaboratively with the Family Office Exec Leader (Exec), the Director position will provide critical strategic and back office financial management support with a heavy focus on tax management, compliance, planning and reporting.
This role facilitates a "make it happen" philosophy, providing thoughtful guidance on problem resolution, including hands-on training methods to bring issues and projects to successful completion.
The Director will also support the Exec to solidify the vision for the family office, as well as the strategic and financial infrastructure for the family entities.
The Director will strive to instill a "best practices" philosophy in all functional areas to improve workflow, simplify reporting procedures, and enhance service delivery to the family. Much of this role is about supporting the executive leadership and working collaboratively with the family and family office team to improve and professionalize the family office structure.
The family's business and investment entities are entrepreneurial in nature and consist of over 50 legal entities comprised of personal, operating, and business/portfolio investments. These interests include, but are not limited to, public and private entity investments, direct energy investments, an employment staffing company for domestic employees, a large personal real estate portfolio, production and entertainment ventures and investments, equestrian interests, aviation and yacht entities, and a private foundation. The family utilizes a broad array of external resources and consultants as needed including attorneys, investment advisors, private bankers, CPAs, and other external professionals.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director will work collaboratively with the senior leadership and family office team in a "hands-on" role to enhance and deliver on the vision, goals and objectives of the Principals, as well as the strategic and financial infrastructure for the family's personal initiatives. Primary areas of responsibility will include:
· Management oversight for tax planning, compliance, and strategies for all entities, and serve as the subject matter expert for Family related tax questions.
· Provide research and guidance on new tax legislation and regulations and ensure compliance with relevant IRS regulations.
· Oversee preparation and review of quarterly tax estimates and tax provisions; federal, state, local and special tax returns; and responses to inquiries from IRS and other taxing authorities. Additionally, the Director will serve as a reviewer for all corporate, individual, trust, foundation, and gift tax returns.
· Serve as liaison with external tax advisers, which includes working with external tax advisors on an ongoing basis regarding tax planning strategies integrated through multiple jurisdictions in which the family is active. This will also include developing estate planning ideas in collaboration with the estate planning attorney.
· Work with Information Technology (IT) staff on all technical matters relating to tax applications as needed.
· Provide ongoing support for tax reporting and compliance for family members, trusts and other legal entities as needed, as well as estate planning matters and trust administration.
· Provide ongoing, collaborative support to the Investment Team that will include working to ensure tax efficient portfolio decisions; applying subject matter expertise to assist on vehicle selection and structuring for investments; assessing suitability of tax loss harvesting strategies; and providing guidance on modeling tax impacts at exit for direct investments. Also provide support and guidance on the carry structure including carried interest calculations, overseeing the K1 flow-through reporting, reviewing the 1099s and K1s; and providing guidance for modeling estimated tax projections.
· In addition to the core tax responsibilities, the Director will work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team to support the financial management initiatives of the Family Office including accounting and reporting; treasury & liquidity management; budgeting; modelling and analytics; residential real estate (multiple trophy properties) initiatives; strategic planning and forecasting; and risk management.
· Provide leadership oversight for business improvement and efficiency opportunities partnering across all business areas and assist in analyzing operational issues impacting the various entities and provide recommendations for improvement as needed.
· Assist in hiring, managing and mentoring staff as needed; also, develop a plan for ongoing professional development of the staff including himself or herself and provide cross-training opportunities to ensure flexible staffing.
· Assist in planning and facilitating meetings with Principals and appropriate advisors, including preparation of meeting materials.
· Assist in establishing credibility throughout the family office and with family members as an effective developer of solutions to operational and business challenges.
· Work with a "best practices" philosophy in all functional areas.
